This is a 2-year contract position as a Lead R&D Engineer in the Centre for Environmental Sustainability.

Job Description

Your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Lead thermo‑mechanical system design at component, sub‑assembly, and system levels
• Design, analyse, and optimise thermofluid systems such as HVAC, cooling systems, heat exchangers, and energy recovery systems
• Develop project scope, define system requirements, and prepare technical proposals for industry consultancy projects
• Apply thermodynamic and heat transfer principles to solve real‑world industrial and building energy problemsConduct system modelling, simulation, and performance analysis to support design decisionsSupport fabrication, testing, commissioning, and performance improvement of deployed systems
• Collaborate with embedded software and electrical engineers on integrated system solutions
• Conduct applied R&D to develop and translate new technologies aligned with CFES’ technology roadmapDeliver training to industry partners through formal short courses or as part of consultancy engagements

Requirements

• Degree in Mechanical Engineering, with at least 5 years of relevant industrial experience
• Strong foundation in thermodynamics, heat transfer, and fluid mechanics, with demonstrated applied experience
• Hands‑on experience in thermal and thermofluid system design, analysis, and optimisation
• Proficiency in CAD and design tools such as SolidWorks; experience with simulation tools (e.g. CFD, FloMASTER) would be an advantage
• Experience in HVAC, chilled water systems, refrigeration, or energy systems is highly desirable
• Familiarity with energy performance evaluation and IPMVP protocol would be an advantage
• Experience in applied R&D, consultancy services, or industrial system deployment
• Ability to coordinate effectively with staff, student interns, and industry collaborators
• Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and systems‑thinking skills
• Good written and oral communication skills

• Architect control systems at component, sub‑assembly, and system level, including controller selection, I/O design, and communication architecture
• Develop and implement control software using PLC platforms and high‑level programming languages (e.g. C++, C#, Python)
• Integrate sensors, actuators, and field devices using common industrial communication protocols (e.g. Modbus, BACnet)
• Define system requirements, design project scope, and prepare technical proposals for industry consultancy projects
• Collaborate across mechanical, electrical, and thermal domains to deliver integrated system solutions
• Conduct applied R&D to develop and translate new technologies in line with CFES’ technology roadmap
• Support commissioning, testing, troubleshooting, and performance optimisation of deployed systems
• Deliver training to industry partners through short courses or as part of consultancy engagements

Requirements

• Proficiency in one or more programming languages such as C++, C#, or Python, applied to industrial or embedded systems

• Experience in applied R&D, consultancy, or industrial system deployment

Job Responsibilities:

Workshop Operations

• Support Makers’ Academy staff in the day-to-day to operation of the workshop facilities (blk 56 or blk 25), including but not limited to 3D printers, laser cutting machines, and tabletop fabrication machines.
• Assist in equipment setup, basic troubleshooting and monitoring of machine usage during operational hours.

Safety & Compliance

• Ensure all workshop users adhere to safety guidelines and operating procedures.
• Conduct routine safety checks on equipment and the workshop environment.
• Report any safety incidents, hazards or equipment faults.

Administration & housekeeping

• Maintain orderliness, cleanliness of the workshop.
• Assist with basic inventory checks and upkeep of tools, materials, and consumables.
• Support documentation and simple administrative tasks related to workshop operations when required.

Prototyping & User Support

• Provide guidance to students on the correct use of tools, machines, and materials for prototyping activities.
• Advise students on suitable fabrication approaches based on their project requirements.
• Communicate effectively with students to understand their needs and guide them through the prototyping process.

Pre-requisites:

• Hands‑on experience operating 3D printers, laser cutters, and/or other digital fabrication equipment.
• Working knowledge of prototyping processes within a maker space or workshop environment.
• Practical design or making skills, with an interest in hands‑on fabrication.
• Comfortable working in a workshop or maker space setting.
• Able to communicate clearly and patiently with students and stakeholders.
• Safety‑conscious, detail‑oriented, and able to follow established procedures.

This is a temporary hourly rated position.

• Relevant qualifications in Engineering (e.g. Electronics, Computer, Electrical, Mechanical, etc.)  with at least 5 years of relevant industry experience in product design/development/manufacturing or research and development
• Minimum 2 years of experience in emerging technological sectors
