Research Assistant

We are looking for research assistants with a quantitative background for ongoing research in Public Health.
They will be working within the team under the Principal Investigator Dr Shihui Jin alongside multiple collaborators and experts.
Methods include agent based/individual based modelling, SEIR modelling, geospatial statistics, Bayesian statistics, burden mapping, measuring the impact of the environment on disease among others. The PI has projects in both infectious and chronic disease, measuring the impact of interventions.

Candidates need to be able to understand statistical modelling, have a mathematical background, and be fluent in R programming. We will also consider candidates who have extensive C++ or Python coding knowledge as these are transferrable to R.

The candidate will be working with the Principal Investigator(s) on the analysis of national health datasets, utilising an array of methods to infer statistical relationships and health outcomes. Further mathematical modelling will also be carried out when necessary involving diagnostic flows and where appropriate, disease spread and/or illness progression.

The Principal Investigator(s) is seeking for an independent worker who is well-organized, analytical and codes competently. They will however be receiving support from a team of mathematicians, epidemiologists and statisticians, and have a diverse portfolio of tasks. Under the team’s guidance, they will be expected to co-lead their own publications.

The National Institute of Education invites suitable applications for the position of Research Assistant on a 16-month contract at the Office for Research.

Project Title: Reading Futures Study: A Longitudinal Cross-Case Comparison of Adolescents’ Print and Digital Reading Practices

Project Introduction: Large-scale changes in the educational context such as the Personal Learning Device (PLD) initiative in Singapore since 2021, the implementation of Full-Subject-Based Banding in all schools, and the widespread use of machine learning technologies have led to seismic changes in the educational system, with impact on the everyday practices of teaching and learning. Reading is a basic literacy skill for information-gathering, higher order thinking and independent learning across an individual’s lifetime. Understanding how students learn to read and use reading to learn, whether in print or digitally, is crucial for designing learning environments and curriculum, whether online or in person, to support students’ lifelong learning. This study makes use of an innovative mobile ethnography method alongside traditional ethnographic research to capture the just-in-time reading habits and practices of adolescence across print, smartphone, PLD and other devices, both in school and out-of-school across chronological time (from Secondary 1 to Secondary 4). Findings will have implication for literacy and school library policy, curriculum and instruction.

Job Description

To support the lab’s research programme by performing experimental work and providing technical assistance, with a focus on mouse handling and genotyping, molecular biology, and RNA and cancer biology–related techniques, to enable the timely and high-quality completion of research objectives.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Perform mouse breeding, weaning, and colony maintenance in accordance with approved animal welfare and husbandry standards.
• Conduct mouse genotyping (e.g., sample collection and PCR-based assays), analyse results, and maintain accurate colony and experimental records.
• Support in vivo studies by administering experimental treatments as required, monitoring animal health/status, and assisting with the collection and processing of biological samples/tissues.
• Perform molecular and cell biology experiments relevant to RNA and cancer biology (e.g., nucleic acid extraction, PCR/qPCR, cloning, gel electrophoresis, Western blot, cell culture), as required by the project.
• Prepare reagents and buffers, maintain laboratory stocks/equipment, and ensure proper documentation of experimental procedures and results.
• Collaborate with researchers to provide technical support, troubleshoot experiments, and contribute to the timely completion of study milestones.
• Ensure compliance with institutional, ethical, and regulatory requirements (e.g., animal research, biosafety), including adherence to approved protocols and record-keeping.

Job Description

The Research Assistant/Engineer will be involved in field sampling of coastal and fresh waters as well as laboratory analysis of water quality. The data will be used to develop computer models for predicting microbial and chemical water quality. In addition to the above, the Research Assistant/ Engineer is expected to contribute actively in writing reports and research papers, presenting research updates and liasing with external parties.

Qualifications

• A Bachelor in Environmental Engineering or equivalent. 
• Experience in water quality/environmental modelling and/or experience in water quality analysis and environmental engineering is preferred.
