The Cardiovascular and Metabolic Disorders (CVMD) Programme houses state-of-the-art technologies for profiling mitochondrial function and metabolic adaptations in human patients and other model organisms and undertakes translational and clinical research in cardiovascular and metabolic disorders.

Dr. Matthew Hirschey's laboratory has a long-standing focus on uncovering the fundamental mechanisms of metabolism and hormone signaling in normal physiology and disease, with a current emphasis on hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Using cutting-edge genomic and metabolomic methods, the group seeks to identify new regulators and pathways governing metabolic rewiring and endocrine control in liver cancer, and to discover therapeutic targets relevant to HCC and related cardiometabolic disorders.

The selected candidate will perform a variety of functions related to research under the supervision of the Principal Investigator or his/her designate, including but not limited to the following:

This project investigates how learners engage with educational content and interactive systems powered by generative AI. It explores the neurobiological, emotional, and behavioral aspects of listening and conversation in academic settings, focusing on the ways learners process spoken input, engage with digital characters, and experience language-based interaction in AI-enhanced environments. The study involves two phases. One focuses on how learners respond to academic input in various formats, and the other explores user interaction with conversational systems built on generative AI. Across both phases, the project will use a range of behavioral, neurophysiological, and self-report measures to gain a well-rounded understanding of user engagement and comprehension. The findings are expected to inform future practices in using AI technology, language assessment, and learner-centered design.

Requirements

Project Introduction:

The introduction of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into education has potentially ushered in an era of new possibilities for reimagining learning, teaching, and assessment practices. The current developments in machine learning, data analytics, natural language processing, and other adaptive technologies promise to provide students with personalised learning pathways and automated feedback, while supporting teachers to adopt a more discursive teaching stance (Pepin et al., 2025). For instance, ChatGPT and other AI-enabled technologies have been used to support teachers in planning mathematics lessons (Gurl et al., 2024), developing mathematics tasks (Schorcht et al., 2024), and designing learning environments for mathematical problem solving (Liu et al., 2025). These perceived affordances of AI have catalysed interests in developing more responsive and differentiated mathematics instruction through a data-driven approach.

However, it remains unclear how teachers can fully harness the affordances of these AI-enabled technologies, given their limitations in reliability (e.g., hallucinations) and adaptability for use with diverse student groups (Celik et al., 2022; Schorcht et al., 2024). Furthermore, as highlighted by Sinha (2025), what constitutes good AI use in education depends on teachers’ perspectives of learning—do they see learning from an instructivist, constructivist, or embodied perspective? These differing perspectives can influence how teachers think about mathematics task design (Schorcht et al., 2024). More importantly, how AI-generated tasks or AI educational tools are used in classrooms adds to the complexities and nuances of orchestrating learning experiences for students. It is not simply about the design of the task, but also how the task is used in the actual instruction (Smith & Stein, 1998).

Therefore, the main aim of this project is to investigate how two expert teachers think as they orchestrate AL-enabled learning experiences in mathematics classrooms, from planning to implementation.

Successful candidates will be embedded in a multidisciplinary team working with epidemiologists, clinicians, biostatisticians, data scientists, and public health agencies.

We welcome candidates with complementary skill profiles. One position is oriented towards computational/statistical modelling; the other towards data engineering, visualisation, and software development. Both positions involve hands-on research work and will suit candidates looking to build a strong research track record before or alongside a PhD. The postholder will work with Asst. Prof. Swapnil Mishra (Deputy Director, CERM and AI for Public Health Programme) and engage an active network of collaborators spanning CERM, NUS, Imperial College London, Ashoka University, the Communicable Diseases Agency Singapore (CDA), the National Environment Agency Singapore (NEA), the Machine Learning & Global Health Network (MLGH), and wider regional and global partners.

Key Responsibilities
• Implement and test statistical and computational models for infectious disease dynamics (compartmental models, Bayesian inference, phylogenetic analysis, or machine learning pipelines depending on profile).
• Process, clean, and analyse large-scale epidemiological, genomic, and/or mobility datasets.
• Develop data visualisation tools and contribute to interactive surveillance dashboards.
• Support the preparation of manuscripts, reports, conference presentations, and workshops.
• Collaborate with internal team members and external partners across institutions and countries.
• Contribute to code documentation and reproducible research workflows.

Qualifications

Research Associate (higher band): Master's degree in a relevant discipline (statistics, epidemiology, computer science, bioinformatics, computational biology, biostatistics, or related) with two years of relevant work experience.

Research Assistant (entry band): Bachelor's degree with strong analytical training; candidates with no experience are welcome to apply.

• Solid quantitative background; familiarity with Bayesian inference or machine learning is an advantage.
• Proficiency in Python and/or R; experience with probabilistic programming (Stan, PyMC, NumPyro) or deep learning frameworks (PyTorch, JAX) is desirable but not required.
• Ability to work with real-world datasets and to communicate findings clearly in writing and presentations.
• Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
• A publication or pre-print record (for Research Associate level) is an advantage but not essential.
