Asia Research Institute

The Asia Research Institute (ARI), National University of Singapore (NUS), invites applications for the full-time position of Research Associate to work on a major, five-year long research project, funded by the Social Sciences Research Council (SSRC) Singapore, under its Thematic Grant programme, entitled Climate Governance of Nature-based Carbon Sinks in Southeast Asia. The position is available on a full-time basis for one year in the first instance, with possibility for renewal up until the end of the project in September 2027.

Job Description

The successful candidate will possess relevant experience and interest in environment and development issues in Southeast Asia. The candidate will have expertise in Information Technology (IT) and website design, necessary for the operation and maintenance of our digital portal (Carbon Governance in Southeast Asia, CGSEA: https://cgsea.org/).

Candidate will be required to liaise with our research consortium members in maintaining our research networks and project updates on social media sites. The RA will also be responsible for administering all aspects of the project, from making travel and conference bookings to procurement and processing payments to compiling and collating data for annual reports and auditing, on a day-to-day basis. In addition, s/he will organise the logistical details of workshops and conferences and take minutes of meetings with stakeholders.

The RA will also take responsibility for liaising with Singapore-based community groups involved in the research.

Job Requirements

The successful candidate should have at least a Master’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., Geography, Environmental Studies or International Development).

Job Description

We are seeking a full-time Research Associate (Quantitative Analysis) to work on empirical research in the area of population aging, mortality, and pensions, with an active focus on Singapore and Asia. The project is part of a larger interdisciplinary research program aimed at developing a better understanding of how aging beliefs and mortality expectations may influence financial decision-making among participants in a pension scheme. The Principal Investigator of this project is Associate Professor Joelle Fong. 

The LKY School of Public Policy is part of the National University of Singapore, which is Asia’s top university in the QS World University Rankings.

Candidates should have a background in Statistics, Economics, or Risk Management & Insurance.  Knowledge of mortality analysis and life table methods is required. Candidates with also some knowledge and experience in how pension systems function will be a good fit. The successful candidate must demonstrate good overall competence in quantitative research methods and be proficient with statistical software such as STATA or R.  Due to the nature of the role, excellent written and spoken English is essential.

The Energy Studies Institute (ESI) is a research institute at the National University of Singapore seeking to advance the understanding of energy policy issues by conducting independent research and analysis.  We are looking for researchers to join a multi-disciplinary team carrying out research projects on a range of energy issues that are of concern to Singapore and the region.

The Institute is looking to recruit a researcher with expertise in energy and climate change policy at the rank of Research Fellow. The appointed staff will operate under the responsibility of the Institute Head and work closely with all members across each of the institute’s divisions. Candidates are expected to be highly familiar with i) climate change and decarbonisation issues and ii) quantitative or qualitative analysis methods. An understanding of Singapore's energy and economic system and local work experience is desirable.

Job Description

The specific area of work will depend on the institute’s priorities at any given point in time. In the near term, to support ongoing research within the institute, the appointed candidate will be expected to contribute to the analysis of various energy transition and decarbonisation strategies. Examples of priority areas include:

• Evaluating public awareness of and attitudes towards energy transition;
• Estimating willingness to pay (WTP) for low-carbon options;
• Conducting comparative analysis of the governments’ strategies to support energy transition, including electricity market reform, renewable energy deployment, and public communication of policy;

• Close collaboration with Product Development Team and relevant business stakeholders to design and devise innovative product proposition and support product pricing and implementation, while ensuring internal financial metrics are met.
• Work closely with Manager, Head of GH Pricing, Chief Actuary and other senior stakeholders, as required, to support and contribute actuarial analysis and pricing recommendations aligned with company product strategy for the health business. 
• Monitor portfolio experience, conduct experience studies to set pricing assumptions and perform periodic repricing exercise. Provide insights on key drivers and emerging risks. Strengthen technical pricing and analytics for the team tapping on data-driven insights using external and internal data sources
• Adopt best practices and effective controls and monitoring framework in the delivery of pricing work to protect Income against regulatory, financial and reputation risk.
• Enhancing Actuarial Pricing Process to improve efficiency, robustness and turnaround time.
• Adopt design‑thinking and agile principles, in delivering pricing and product‑related projects

Qualifications:

• Good progress in actuarial qualifications with either US, UK, or Australia Actuarial Institute, with at least 4 years of work experience in Actuarial function.
• Experienced in health and protection product development and pricing
• Experience in using actuarial modelling tool and data software such as Prophet & Alteryx will be a plus
• Able to work independently with strong project management, communication and actuarial technical skills.
• Confident in constructively challenging the status quo and proposing improvements to drive better outcomes
• Adaptable and open to dynamic working environment and willing to explore new ways of working.
• Experience in stakeholder management and/or project‑based work.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Preparation of project documentation (VO/Omission including justification, progress claim and etc)
2. Assist project personnel in issuance of PO including getting comparison quote and discussion required
3. Certification of contractor’s payment claim
4. Conduct site walk to verified work done on site
5. All contract related matters
6. Closure of Project Final Account

Requirements:

• Min Diploma in Quantity Surveying
• Minimum 2 years of relevant experience in interior renovations/construction fields is an advantage
• Strong interpersonal skills
• Proactive, responsible, and able to take initiative
• Able to start work immediately
• Singaporeans / PRs only

Responsibilities:

• Collate relevant and important data that are pertinent to the research assignment delivered by the Company and perform quantitative analysis on the data to provide insights, analysis and forecast of industry development;
• Researching, writing and publishing a series of reports on a topic-by-topic basis that would also contribute to a benchmarking library on the topic;
• Design questionnaire/survey according to the scope of work required, conduct interviews with industry players to collate required data and information and developing excellent power point presentation to share its findings;
• Contribute to the reputation of the Company and its research business through all forms of client contact, speaking engagements, press interviews and general availability for marketing and related activities.

• Ability to undertake and execute strategic research work including developing research methodologies, conducting primary fieldwork (which involves, sourcing an conducting interviews with primary sources in the industry) collating primary data, designing conceptual models, writing and presenting reports as required for our industry;

Requirements:

• Possess a recognised degree(Masters preferred);
• Excellent English written and oral communication skills is a must;
• Demonstrate strong aptitude and 2 to 4 years proven work experience as a Research Professional in the financial services;
• Strong analytical skills, ability to quickly analyse trends in wholesale and transaction banking;
• Strong skills in the use of statistical, Word, Excel and PowerPoint software;
• Able to formulate, execute and to work on multiple projects simultaneously;
• Must be a team-player.
