Purpose of the post
We are seeking a skilled Research Assistant to support the development and validation of an advanced preterm birth (PTB) screening tool that integrates AI-based analysis of vaginal microbiome, miRNAs, maternal medical history, and demographic factors. The successful candidate will focus on sample preparation and analysis to identify microbial composition and activity associated with PTB using Desorption Electrospray Ionization Mass Spectrometry (DESI-MS) and 16S rRNA sequencing. This is an excellent opportunity to work with cutting-edge DESI-MS technology, develop expertise in high-throughput Illumina sequencing, and contribute to impactful translational research. The successful candidate also has the prospect to receive overseas training in these techniques.

Main duties and responsibilities
This role is ideal for an individual passionate about maternal-fetal health and translational research, seeking to understand molecular and microbial factors driving preterm birth. The Research Assistant will:

(1)    Prepare and process biological samples for microbiome and biomarker analysis;
(2)    Conduct DESI-MS experiments to profile microbial composition and activity linked to PTB;
(3)    Perform 16S rRNA sequencing, including sample preparation, library construction, and quality control;
(4)    Maintain accurate laboratory records and ensure compliance with safety and quality standards;

Qualification and Experience

a. Background in maritime, science or engineering fields with 3 years of relevant working experience

b. Experience in R&D strategy formulation, technology fore-sighting / road mapping, technology translation, and/or good working knowledge of the R&D landscape in Singapore.

c. Experience with grant governance and administration e.g. funding guidelines or compliance requirements;

d. Strong interest in applied science and technology R&D and research community engagement

e. Strong basics in computing, data science, and AI applications related to robotic or autonomous physical systems or industry-relevant problems are also welcome

Skills

a. Proficient in Microsoft Office and grant management software (e.g. Oracle Netsuite);

b. Good analytical skills, with an ability to take a strategic perspective when formulating proposals and recommendations;

c. Excellent interpersonal, communication and presentation skills for effective engagement of senior stakeholders, partner agencies, IHLs/RIs and companies;

d. Proven planning and organisational abilities.

This is an exciting opportunity to join an early-stage biotech venture working at the forefront of yeast fermentation. As a Research Intern, you will support ongoing R&D efforts in strain engineering and bioprocess development to enable the production of innovative lipid ingredients via precision fermentation.

You will work closely with the CTO, Senior Strain Engineer, and broader technical team, gaining hands-on experience in genetic engineering, microbial cultivation, and experimental design in a fast-paced startup environment.

Job Description:

• Support routine laboratory operations, including keeping well-organized experimental records and preparation and maintenance of strains, reagents, and consumables
• Execute day-to-day experimentation, including molecular biology workflows and strain screening
• Assist in the design, construction, and testing of engineered microbial (yeast) strains
• Support lipid and fatty acid characterization through analytical assays
• Contribute to ongoing strain engineering and fermentation optimization projects

Ideal Qualifications:

• Currently pursuing or recently completed a Bachelor’s degree in Bioengineering, Chemical Engineering, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, or a related field
• Basic laboratory experience in molecular biology, microbiology, or biochemical engineering
• Familiarity with yeast systems or microbial fermentation is a plus
• Exposure to genetic engineering techniques (e.g.,cloning, transformation, CRISPR) is advantageous
