Job Description

The National University of Singapore invites applications for Research Assistant/ Research Associate in the Human Potential Translational Research Programme (HPTRP), Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine.  The HPTRP aims to bring together researchers from a wide range of disciplines with an interest to maximise human potential. In HPTRP, focusing only on human studies, we aim to adopt a holistic perspective that considers human potential as an integrative measure of health, productivity, performance, human capital and overall well-being over the lifespan, in our environment. Appointments will be made on two-year contract, with the possibility of further extension.

Purpose of the post

We are looking for a highly motivated individual to coordinate data collection and support research operations under the Growing Up in Singapore Towards healthy Outcomes (GUSTO) birth cohort study.  The Research Assistant/Associate will be responsible to, and work closely with, the Principal Investigators and study team members to ensure the successful completion of GUSTO projects on time. The RA’s principal role will be to work in general practices such as data collection, data entry and analysis and drafting of publications and reports.

Main duties and responsibilities

The Research Assistant/Associate will liaise with the relevant personnel to smooth the process of recruitment and data collection and will be accountable to the Principal Investigator(s).

The Research Assistant/Associate will be expected to:

1. Conduct surveys and interviews with children, adolescents, and parents at KK Children’s and Women’s Hospital. 
2. Manage the participant reimbursement schedule.
3. Maintain data security and confidentiality according to PDPA. 
4. Draft ethics approval forms in accordance with IRBs. 
5. Conduct extensive work with data, including organization, cleaning, coding, and analysis. 
6. Train and supervise undergraduate research assistants. 
7. Provide timely updates of the study to PI/Project Manager. 
8. Work flexibly with participants across a range of settings (e.g. hospital, university research lab), and hours (e.g., some weekends and evenings). 
9. Additional research and administrative duties (e.g. preparation of manuscripts for publication, conference presentations, purchases, grant reports).
10. Perform literature review, data analysis and drafting of reports and publications.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Psychology, Social Sciences, or related disciplines 

• Strong background in developmental research and experimental design 

• Good statistical background (e.g. Microsoft Office, SPSS, R) 

• Experiences working with parents and children preferred  

• Excellent written and oral communication skills

Job Description

•    Conduct literature review on recent research on resource allocation.
•    Weekly discussions with the supervisor (myself) on formulating important and novel research problems and brainstorming different approaches.
•    Construct mathematical models that capture meaning problem formulations, and identify why existing methods are insufficient.
•    Develop solutions in the form of algorithm design and analysis. The analysis involves mathematical proofs and empirical evaluations (require writing codes) on the proposed algorithms and existing benchmarks.
•    Prepare slides and present scientific findings in research conferences.
•    Writing research papers for submission(s) to top Operations Research (OR) journals, such as NFORMS Operations Research and/or Management Science journals, and/or the MSOM journal.
•    May need to work with external collaborators on numerical experiments with real world data (but this job is purely on academic research and is not part of an industrial collaboration project).

Job Requirements

•    A strong foundation in mathematics, particularly in probability and optimization. 
•    A PhD degree (or close to PhD completion) in engineering or management science degree, related to Operations Research. 
•    The ability in conducting academic research in Operations Research (OR), with skillsets including understanding research papers published in the INFORMS Operations Research and/or Management Science journals, and/or the MSOM journal.
