Requirements

• Minimum 5 years of relevant experience as a Resident Engineer, with proven exposure to private high-rise developments, industrial facilities (e.g., factories), HDB projects, and infrastructure works under CAG and LTA.

The Department of Architecture, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, and Department of Built Environment are jointly conducting research on harnessing regional tropical timber/bamboo for sustainable and durable mass engineered timber (MET) products for the Tropics. We are looking for one candidate who can contribute in the following areas:

•    Timber/Bamboo Grading and lamellar strength determination/classifications guidelines
•    Range of product sizes and configurations and their respective design data/properties for Glulam / CLT / Laminated Bamboo Lumber (LBL)
•    Factory production control and audit practices / requirements
•    Assist in technical studies on the different timber and non-timber /MET products
•    Assist in preparing manuscripts for academic journal articles, filing of patents and/or conference presentations.
•    Assist PI and Co-PIs in general administrative management of the research project.

•    PhD in Engineering, Physics, Materials Science, Chemistry, Nanotechnology, or a closely related field.

Required Skills:
•    Experimental experience in nanofabrication, nanomaterials synthesis, or nanoscale manufacturing.
•    Knowledge of electronic spin phenomena, spintronics, chiral materials, or quantum materials.

Job Description

We are seeking a full-time Postdoctoral Fellow to work on research in the areas of demographic aging and mortality from a social policy perspective, with an active focus on Singapore and Asia. The project is part of a larger interdisciplinary research program aimed at developing a better understanding of how aging beliefs and mortality expectations may influence retirement decision-making among individuals and households. The Principal Investigator of this project is Associate Professor Joelle Fong.

Description:

Candidates must hold a PhD in Demography, or Economics, or Sociology. A strong knowledge of mortality analysis and life table methods is required. Candidates with also some experience in the household economic and/or financial sectors will be a particularly good fit. The successful candidate must demonstrate good overall competence in quantitative research methods and be proficient with statistical software such as STATA or R. Due to the nature of the role, excellent written and spoken English is essential. 

The Postdoctoral Fellow will conduct independent, in-depth, and publishable research on aging beliefs and mortality expectations, and their implications on household decision-making. The geographical focus covers Singapore, and may include parts of Asia. There will be opportunities to design and field surveys to collate primary data. The full-time Postdoctoral Fellow is expected to produce two journal articles during their contract. Other responsibilities include:

• Contribute to the design and fielding of surveys to collate individual-level data
• Contribute to book chapters and policy reports 
• Prepare presentation materials for meetings, conferences, etc
• Prepare manuscripts for submission, and research administration
• Any other work as assigned

The position will have an initial one-year term with the possibility of renewal for a second year based on satisfactory performance and available funding.

Qualifications

• A PhD degree in Demography, or Economics, or Sociology, from a reputable university
• Familiar in working with large datasets for statistical analysis
• Good track record in publishing in related, peer-reviewed journals
• Demonstrate good organisational and analytical skills
• Responsible, detail oriented, and perfection-seeking
• Must be able to self-motivated, able to work independently, as well as in a team
• Expertise in topics on household economics, household finance, economics of aging, and retirement is a plus

The candidate is expected to be physically present in office during the stipulated working hours, and able to commit to at least 1 year of service.
