The Senior Engineer, Process Development & Sustaining will lead the development, optimization, and sustaining of manufacturing processes for WD's HDD storage products. This is a technically deep, cross-functional role requiring strong foundation in chemistry, materials science, or chemical engineering.

You will drive process characterization, chemical/material qualification, and yield improvement initiatives while ensuring manufacturing processes remain stable, compliant, and cost-competitive. The role of tribology engineer is to set up or develop component media mechanical interface test to simulate hard disk drive reliability performance. It is crucial to assist media R&D team to develop reliable tribology design

• Conduct advanced tribological testing and analysis using state-of-the-art equipment and methodologies
• Design and implement experimental procedures to evaluate friction, wear, and lubrication in complex mechanical systems
• Analyze test data using statistical software and develop comprehensive technical reports
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate tribological insights into product development and optimization
• Present findings and recommendations to diverse audiences, including management and global teams  
• Contribute to the development of new testing methods and equipment to enhance tribological analysis capabilities
• Taking charge of tribology testers maintenance, spare parts inventory management and hardware upgrading activities 

• Specifically to carry out process capability and development programs related to Lube Process
• Carry out Lube Cpk, instruments’ EMP and Gauge R&R improvement activities
• Process transfer for new products implementation
• Plan and implement cost improvements or savings for Lube Process
• Yield/Defect/Quality improvement
• New software and project propagation buy off
• Synergy with ETA for new equipment development
• Machine PPH Improvement via process development and improvement
• Assist second source development for Lube Process
• Maintain and establish documentation and FMEA leadership for Lube Process
• New Equipment Qualification
• Continue support ACD Process
• Conduct training for new engineers and cross site teams who need to understand Lube Process.
• Subject Matter Expert for Lube Process.

Job Description

Essential Responsibilities:

• Analyze reject disks using microscopes and advanced equipment (AFM, SEM EDX, Wyko, Zygo, OSA) to identify and classify defects.
• Interpret defect analysis results, including SEM EDX data, and compile failure analysis reports.
• Lead discussions with process owners on defect issues and work to address unknown defects.
• Track and monitor yield performance using EIS and Spotfire, including viewing iris mapping and disk quality performance (KPOV).
• Coordinate with FA Tech to ensure correct reject disks are pulled for analysis.
• Develop and implement corrective and preventive actions (CAPA) to improve defect rates.
