FHT2 is an NRF-CREATE programme co-funded by the National Research Foundation (NRF), ETH Zurich, and NHG-NTU, and represents the second phase of the FHT initiative launched in 2020. The programme brings together psychologists, neuroscientists, computer scientists, engineers and clinicians to develop next-generation digital health solutions.

The Software Engineer will join the Monitoring and Supporting Cognitive Health in the Community project. This project focuses on the development and deployment of an AI-powered mobile platform designed to assess, monitor, and support cognitive health during real-world navigation. The platform integrates cognitive and navigation assessments, smartphone sensor data, and AI-driven conversational agents.

A central component of the project is the development of a robust, scalable, and user-friendly mobile application ecosystem across iOS, Android, and web platforms. The Software Engineer will play a key role in building and maintaining this system, enabling real-time interaction, data collection, and AI-driven feedback. The project is closely aligned with Healthier SG and the Action Plan for Successful Ageing, with clear pathways for real-world deployment in Singapore.

Job description

The successful candidate will be responsible for the design, development, and maintenance of a cross-platform mobile and web application for cognitive health monitoring and support.

Working within a highly multidisciplinary team across the Singapore-ETH Centre (SEC), NUS, and NTU, the Software Engineer will collaborate closely with researchers, designers, and clinicians to translate research prototypes into reliable and scalable software systems.

Key responsibilities include developing and maintaining mobile applications for iOS (Swift) and Android (Kotlin), as well as contributing to the web-based frontend (ReactJS) and backend services (NodeJS). The candidate will implement features enabling user interaction with AI-driven conversational agents, integrate APIs and sensor data pipelines, and ensure smooth communication between frontend and backend systems.

The role also involves optimizing app performance, ensuring data security and privacy, and supporting deployment and testing in real-world environments. The Software Engineer will contribute to system architecture decisions and help establish best practices for scalable and maintainable software development.

Given the translational nature of the project, the position offers the opportunity to work on impactful real-world applications at the intersection of AI, mobile computing, and digital health.

Selection Criteria

Applicants should hold a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field. Salary commensurates with educational qualifications and work experience.

Strong programming skills and hands-on experience in modern software development are essential. In particular, candidates must have experience in:

• ReactJS for web frontend development
• NodeJS for backend development and API design
• Swift for iOS application development
• Kotlin for Android application development

Experience with full-stack development and building end-to-end applications is highly desirable. Familiarity with RESTful APIs, cloud services, and database systems is expected. Experience with mobile app deployment, testing, and maintenance on both iOS and Android platforms is required.

Experience in user interface (UI) design and user experience (UX), particularly for mobile or interactive applications, is considered a strong advantage.

Exposure to integrating AI components (e.g., LLM-based services), handling real-time data, or working with sensor data is beneficial but not required.

The successful candidate should demonstrate strong problem-solving skills, a structured and pragmatic approach to software engineering, and the ability to work independently as well as in a collaborative, interdisciplinary team. Good communication skills in English are required. An interest in developing impactful applications in healthcare, human-computer interaction, or AI-driven systems is highly valued.

Project background

The healthcare systems of the future must harness data effectively to support clinicians, allowing them to focus on patient care while leveraging AIto detect patterns beyond human perception, enhance diagnostic accuracy, optimise workflows, improve risk assessment and communication. Developing AI models that address these needs is particularly urgent in ageing societies, where rising patient numbers coincide with increasing workforce constraints.

A major contributor to disability in older adults is impaired musculoskeletal (MSK) health, with fall-related fractures representing a central research focus for our group. Despite their substantial socioeconomic burden, progress in prevention and screening has been limited, partly because fall and fracture risks are often addressed independently, despite their shared underlying mechanisms. A promising direction for AI in healthcare is the seamless integration of clinical image-based foundation models that can be fine-tuned across multiple use cases.

In this project, we aim to develop cross-modal AI models for MSK health evaluation by linking diverse clinical imaging datasets. The central innovation is the creation of a shared, tokenized latent space that enables data translation, risk modelling, and local deployment, even in settings with limited imaging data. Particular emphasis will be placed on integrating advanced biomechanical markers of bone health into AI workflows, supporting more precise and clinically actionable risk assessment.

Job description

The PhD candidate will be embedded into a team of researchers that is working on developing large medical image-based AI models for managing MSK health.

Some key components in the work are:

• Pretraining, adapting, and evaluating foundation models for medical image data using self-supervised and multimodal representation learning.

• Developing cross-modal image modelling methods, including cross-modal translation, multimodal fusion, and related generative or representation-learning approaches.

• Evaluating the learned models on clinically relevant downstream tasks, such as bone health assessment, anatomical and biomechanical biomarker estimation, and fracture-risk-related prediction.

• Co-supervision of MSc and BSc students.

Funding is provided for up to four years. After successful completion of studies, the PhD degree will be awarded by ETH Zurich.

Selection Criteria

The current era of artificial intelligence is predominantly driven by advances in computational power and infrastructure. As models scale to unprecedented sizes, their capabilities are enhanced through strategies such as reinforcement learning (RL) and innovative frameworks like the "graph of thoughts". We are firmly in the "Age of Computation", where breakthroughs in AI are synonymous with the ability to harness and optimize massive computational resources. However, this rapid growth in computational demands comes with a critical challenge: energy limitations. Around the globe, new power plants are being constructed to meet the demands of AI workloads, underscoring the urgent need for efficiency to ensure these advancements benefit humanity sustainably. Especially in Singapore, such resources may be scarce and hinder the ability of the country’s researchers to advance in this most important field.

Our collaborative efforts with the A*STAR Institute of High Performance Computing (IHPC) and other partners in Singapore, such as NTU, could be pivotal in this field, driving the development and implementation of innovative AI methods and saving millions of dollars in compute time while accelerating scientific productivity. To enhance the efficacy of AI for Science models, it is imperative to integrate simulations that encode prior scientific knowledge within these AI frameworks. This integration is aimed at creating new models imbued with robust prior knowledge, such as simulated behaviours defined by fundamental equations and conservation laws. Our approach involves the close collaboration of experts from A*STAR / IHPC, who bring extensive experience in high-performance computing and AI-driven scientific research. Together, we aim to push the boundaries of what AI can achieve in scientific domains, ensuring that simulations and AI methodologies are combined to produce highly accurate and reliable models.

Job description

The Postdoctoral Researcher will be co-leading the development of a novel open-source accelerator communication library (OCCL). This communication library should support point-to-point as well as collective communication calls. It should allow communication initiated by the host, as well as communication initiated within accelerator device kernels. It should support a wide range of devices and network substrates, such as NVLINK and next-generation ethernet networks.

Some key components in the work are:

• Co-lead the design and development of an open-source accelerator communication library (OCCL) supporting point-to-point and collective communication for distributed AI workloads.

• Design and implement communication primitives and algorithms optimised for machine learning training and inference workloads, supporting communication initiated by both host applications and accelerator device kernels.

• Investigate and optimise communication patterns for large-scale deep learning workloads, including techniques for improving efficiency through communication scheduling and over-lap with computation.

• Ensure the communication library is configurable and portable across diverse hardware platforms and network substrates, including modern high-performance interconnect technologies used in HPC and ML environments such as UCX, NVLINK, InfiniBand, UltraEthernet and related networking frameworks.

• Evaluate and optimise the communication library and associated software components on GPU clusters and large-scale computing systems, ensuring performance scalability, robustness and usability across heterogeneous computing architectures.

• Collaborate with researchers and engineers at partner institutions in Singapore and Zurich to integrate OCCL with the broader FastTrackAI software ecosystem.

• Maintain effective communication and collaboration with supervisors, research staff and ex-ternal partners distributed across Singapore and Zurich, ensuring alignment of research objectives and deliverables.

• Prepare and publish key scientific outputs, including papers documenting research out-comes and system developments.

• Contribute to the co-supervision of MSc and BSc students working on related research topics.

Selection Criteria

• PhD in Computer Science or any related field.

• The successful candidates should have a strong background in computer science, parallel computing, compilers, performance optimisation, and high-performance computer systems. Excellent knowledge of C and C++ is required.

• A good working knowledge of the design principles of existing high-level communication libraries, such as MPI and NCCL.

• Experience and/or knowledge of modern communication and network technologies used in HPC and ML environments, such as UCX, NVLINK, InfiniBand, UltraEthernet or related frameworks.

• Prior knowledge of communication optimisation for large-scale ML training and inference workloads is essential. A candidate with existing publications in distributed ML systems, HPC systems or related are highly desirable.

• Since the aim of this project is to build a software product, not only a prototype, prior experience in managing and carrying out larger software engineering projects is required.

• The team working on this subject is distributed across Singapore and Zurich, thus a successful candidate must both be able to work independently and communicate effectively with remote colleagues.
