Job Description

The Centre for International Law (CIL) was established in 2009 as a university-level research institute at National University of Singapore (NUS). CIL engages in both legal and multi-disciplinary research on a wide variety of international law issues. Its mission is to enable Singapore and the Asia-Pacific region to play a more significant role in the promotion and development of international law. CIL invites applications for a one-year Research Associate position. We seek an early career scholar specialising in public international law with a strong interest in the governance of artificial intelligence (AI) and sustainability to work as part of the AI and Technology Law programme led by Dr Jon Truby. This position is part of CIL's expanding research programme on AI law, climate and environmental sustainability, and digital governance within the international legal framework. The Research Associate will have the opportunity to advance their research profile in a dynamic and supportive environment at the intersection of AI, sustainability and public international law.

Responsibilities: 

• Conduct high-quality research on the nexus between AI and digital technologies, international law and sustainability.
• Prepare and publish at least one substantial piece of scholarly work suitable for submission to a reputable journal during the appointment.
• Contribute to the development and delivery of CIL’s research agenda on AI, technology and sustainability, including conceptualising new projects and outputs.
• Assist in the preparation of project proposals related to AI governance, climate and sustainability in international law.
• Support the planning, development and organisation of seminars, workshops and conferences, and present research at academic seminars and similar fora.
• Monitor and analyse developments in international law related to AI, emerging technologies and sustainable development, and prepare briefings and research materials for CIL’s programmes.
• Support and expand CIL’s role in regional and global forums addressing legal frameworks for AI, digital technologies and sustainability.
• Contribute, where appropriate, to CIL’s broader research projects, events and initiatives.
• Reside in Singapore throughout the term of appointment, in accordance with NUS policies on residence and leave.

Qualifications

• An LLM, JD degree or equivalent experience, preferably with a focus on AI and/or sustainability or climate and environmental governance;
• Demonstrated scholarly interest in AI and technology law, together with a clear interest in sustainability or climate and environmental governance in international law;
• Proven strong research and writing capabilities, evidenced by publications, working papers or a high-quality dissertation;
• Strong analytical skills to navigate the intersections of AI, sustainability and international law, and to conduct both independent and collaborative research;
• High level of self-motivation and organisational skills, including the ability to manage research tasks, coordinate activities and consistently meet deadlines;
• Ability to collaborate effectively within a team, with excellent oral and written communication skills, and proficiency in relevant IT tools that facilitate research and collaboration.

Job Description

The NUS Centre for International Law (CIL) is inviting applications for a Research Associate position to contribute to the development and research of the International Dispute Resolution (IDR) programme. Candidates with experience in public international law, including in international tribunals such as the International Court of Justice, are encouraged to apply. The focus topic of the IDR programme is disputes involving States and includes issues related to alternative dispute resolution, international courts and tribunals and peace and security.

The duties of the incumbent will include:

• Conducting research and writing on current issues related to the resolution of disputes involving States;
• Contributing to the development of the IDR programme's research agenda;
• Publishing in top tier peer-reviewed journals;
• Developing and implementing conferences, seminars, workshops, and training sessions related to international dispute resolution.

The IDR Research Associate will have the opportunity to work in a small team with a streamlined reporting structure and and engage with practitioners in the field. The successful candidate will also have the chance to collaborate with other CIL research teams and experts, and to attend conferences and workshops.

Qualifications

• A Master’s degree in a relevant area of international law;
• At least one (1) year of professional experience;
• Proven track record in conducting independent research;
• Strong analytical and writing skills;
• Ability to produce academic writing as well as background papers and reports;
• Demonstrable interest in public international law and dispute resolution;
• Strong organisational and communication skills;
• Fluency in English is required;
• Pro-active personality, with the ability to make suggestions and be a hands-on contributor; and

Job Description

We are seeking an enthusiastic and capable full-time Research Associate to work on a project on addressing online toxicity. The successful candidate will work with an interdisciplinary team of scholars based in Singapore to advance research and develop solutions to tackle online toxicity.

The contract is for 1 year and is renewable up to 2 years.

Job tasks

The successful candidate will assist in work towards identifying personas. Responsibilities include data collection via API and social media listening tools, as well as conducting thematic analysis and network mapping. They will also assist in conducting literature reviews, participant recruitment, and compliance with research ethics and data privacy requirements. They will also be required to support research admin and deliverables such as reports/journal articles, workshops and webinars.

Qualifications

Applicants should have at least or close to obtaining a Masters in the Social Sciences/Humanities, Computing or other relevant disciplines.

The candidate should have an interest in and knowledge of online harms and online communities, and be familiar with data collection using API and social media listening tools. Familiarity with Singapore’s socio-cultural landscape is an advantage. Applicants would ideally have experience in quantitative and qualitative research relevant to this multidisciplinary project. Those from social sciences, communications, computer science, or related fields are encouraged to apply.
