The Centre for Epidemic Response & Modelling (CERM) at NUS Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health invites applications for a Research Fellow to drive AI-centred research within a portfolio that spans decision-support for pandemic response, social network modelling, equitable AI for clinical applications, and developing culturally-congruent LLMs to advance behavioural modelling in public health.

The postholder will work with Asst. Requirements:
Applicants are expected to have a doctoral degree from an established University, preferably in public health, health sciences, social sciences, or statistics, with advanced quantitative research skills and strong understanding of Singapore’s health system and landscape.

Job Description

The successful candidate will work with Professor Toh Kim Chuan on methods for convex relaxations of nonsmooth nonconvex optimization under a project on "Methods for nonsmooth nonconvex optimization".

The main responsibilities of the position include the followings: 
•    Conduct independent research on the design, analysis and implementation of efficient and robust algorithms for large-scale structured convex/nonconvex optimization problems.
•    Conduct simulations and experiments to validate established theoretical results and evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithms.
•    Prepare technical reports, research papers, and presentations for academic conferences and journals.
•    Work closely with faculty members, postdocs, and PhD students on research projects.

Qualifications / Discipline:  
•    Graduating PhD or recent PhD holder specializing in computational optimization. 

Skills: 
•    Advanced knowledge on optimization theory and algorithms at PhD level is required, especially strong theoretical and numerical understanding of advanced nonsmooth and/or nonconvex optimization algorithms for matrix and discrete optimizations.
•    Proficiency in Python or Julia, Matlab, C++ for algorithmic implementation. 
•    Good academic writing and presentation skills for publishing research findings.
•    Ability to work independently and collaboratively in an interdisciplinary research environment.

Experience:   
•    At least 2 years of independent research experience in the design and implementation of efficient algorithms for solving large-scale convex/nonconvex nonsmooth optimization problems.

Responsibilities

Research Administration Support

• Track and report budgets, commitments, expenditures and payments accurately
• Assist in submitting project claims and progress reports to grantor
• Support procurement activities by sourcing, purchasing and payments, in compliance with university policies and procedures
• Checking of Concur claims to ensure they are fundable items 
• Perform other duties as assigned

Executive Education

• Prepare the paperwork for Contract for Services, Other Paid Work in NUS (OPWN), NUS Student Work Scheme
• Track registration on NUS Lifelong Learning Application Portal (L3AP) and send reminders to participants to complete their registration
• Vendor record creation, withholding tax processing for overseas speakers
• Source for quotations on airfares and hotel rates for course budget preparation
• Booking of air tickets and hotel accommodation for overseas speakers
• Submit Request for Payment forms and OPWN payment forms for speakers
• Create Purchase Orders for catering, hotel booking and purchases 
• Submit Invoice Request forms to seek payment
• Submit non-Purchase Order invoices for payment processing
• Track expenditure and payments for all courses, prepare profit and loss report
• Transfer payments to course collaborators
• Oversee the classroom and catering logistics during courses, liaise with caterers on set up, booking of course venue and payments for venues
• Liaise with Office of Legal Affairs (OLA) on contracts

Qualifications
