Job Purpose:
The Director of Teaching & Learning leads the development of high-quality teaching and learning across the School. This role works closely with members of the Senior Leadership Team to ensure a clear, consistent and effective approach to curriculum implementation, instructional practice and professional learning.
The Director fosters a structured, inclusive and high-expectation learning environment that reflects the School’s Vision, Mission and Values. The role requires clear leadership, the ability to think strategically to support the School’s continued growth and development, and a visible presence to support staff and students.
A central responsibility of the role is to build staff capability through high-quality professional development, instructional coaching and ongoing support, ensuring that teachers are equipped to deliver effective and engaging learning experiences.
The Director works across the School to ensure curriculum frameworks are clearly understood, consistently implemented and adapted to meet the needs of all students, including those with diverse learning needs, the twice-exceptional (2e)learners and those who learn differently.
Responsibilities:
1.Leadership & School Culture
§ Promote a school culture aligned with the Vision, Mission and Values, fostering high expectations, inclusion and collaboration.
§ Maintain a visible presence across the School, engaging in classrooms and working alongside staff to support high-quality teaching and learning.
§ Work closely with the Senior Leadership Team to implement strategic priorities related to teaching and learning.
§ Establish and communicate clear expectations for curriculum implementation, instructional practice and professional conduct.
§ Ensure expectations for teaching and learning are consistently understood and applied across the School.
§ Work with the Subject Leads and Specialists to ensure the curriculum, including programmes such as ASDAN, reflects best practice and meets the needs of students.
§ Ensure curriculum frameworks are consistently and effectively implemented across the School.
§ Champion high-quality teaching and learning, ensuring alignment between curriculum, instruction and student support.
§ Contribute to school improvement and quality assurance processes aligned with accreditation frameworks, including EduTrust, WASC, COBIS and FOBISIA.
2. Student Support and Well-being
§ Ensure teaching and learning approaches support students in a safe, inclusive and structured environment.
§ Work closely with the Director of Therapy and Pastoral Care to ensure alignment between curriculum, instruction and therapeutic and pastoral support.
§ Promote teaching practices that support a balanced approach to student development, including academic, social and emotional growth.
§ Ensure curriculum and instructional practices are responsive to the needs of students with a range of learning profiles, including those with diverse learning needs, the twice-exceptional (2e) learners and those who learn differently.
3. Communication & Collaboration
§ Maintain clear communication with parents regarding teaching and learning, including curriculum and student progress where appropriate.
§ Build strong partnerships with parents to support student learning and engagement, including leading workshops or information sessions where appropriate.
§ Lead staff meetings and professional learning sessions to ensure alignment of expectations and priorities related to teaching and learning.
§ Work collaboratively with Heads of School and Subject Leads to ensure consistency in curriculum and instructional practice across the School.
§ Represent the School with prospective families and external partners in relation to teaching and learning where appropriate.
4. Staff Leadership and Professional Development
§ Support and develop staff through coaching, collaboration and targeted professional learning.
§ Build staff capacity across the School to deliver high-quality teaching through effective curriculum implementation, instructional practice and assessment.
§ Lead the design and delivery of high-quality professional development aligned with School priorities.
§ Provide instructional coaching through classroom observation, modelling and feedback to improve teaching and learning.
§ Support teachers in setting clear goals for professional growth and instructional improvement.
§ Promote a culture of continuous improvement through reflective practice, feedback and professional dialogue.
§ Support school leaders in developing and maintaining high-quality teaching and learning practices.
§ Represent the School in conducting professional development workshops both locally and regionally.
Requirements:
§ Master's degree in Education, Educational Leadership, Curriculum and Instruction or related field.
§ Minimum 8 years of teaching experience including responsibility in curriculum development, teaching and learning or school improvement.
§ Demonstrates the ability to lead and improve the quality of teaching and learning through professional development, instructional coaching and curriculum leadership, ensuring high standards across the School.
§ Demonstrates strong curriculum knowledge and the ability to support effective implementation across a range of subjects and year groups.
§ Demonstrates the ability to design and deliver high-quality professional learning that builds staff capability and improves teaching practice.
§ Demonstrates strong coaching and facilitation skills, supporting teachers and leaders to develop effective instructional practice.
§ Builds positive professional relationships with staff while setting clear expectations, supporting professional growth and maintaining accountability for high standards of practice.
§ Demonstrates a strong commitment to inclusive education, ensuring teaching and learning approaches support students with diverse and high potential learning needs.
§ Communicates clearly and professionally with staff, students and parents, fostering strong relationships and promoting a positive school culture.
§ Prioritises effectively, makes informed decisions and maintains focus on initiatives that improve teaching, learning and student outcomes.
