The Staff Engineer, Process Development & Sustaining will lead the development, optimization, and sustaining of manufacturing processes for WD's HDD storage products. This is a technically deep, cross-functional role requiring strong foundation in chemistry, materials science, or chemical engineering.

You will drive process characterization, chemical/material qualification, and yield improvement initiatives while ensuring manufacturing processes remain stable, compliant, and cost-competitive. You are expected to operate with high technical autonomy, interface with global R&D and process teams, and mentor junior engineers on the Penang floor.

This role is ideal for a PhD's, or Master's graduate in Chemical Engineering or Materials Science who is passionate about translating lab-scale science into high-volume manufacturing solutions.

Key Responsibilities

Process Development

• Design and develop new manufacturing processes or significantly improve existing ones for HDD production
• Conduct Design of Experiments (DOE) to characterize process windows, identify critical process parameters (CPPs), and optimize process outputs
• Evaluate and qualify new chemicals, materials, and process consumables for manufacturing use
• Develop process recipes, control plans, and standard operating procedures (SOPs)

• Lead engineering evaluations for new technologies, automation solutions, AI-driven manufacturing applications, and Industry 4.0 initiatives to improve operational performance.
• Establish equipment standards, technical specifications, engineering governance, and operational guidelines to ensure consistency across manufacturing operations.
• Provide expert guidance in vacuum systems, plasma generation, sputtering processes, automation controls, robotics, and equipment architecture optimization.
• Lead supplier technical engagements, OEM partnerships, and external engineering collaborations to support technology development, equipment enhancement, and problem resolution.
• Mentor and develop engineers, technical specialists, and engineering leaders by strengthening technical competencies, leadership capabilities, and knowledge-sharing culture.
• Drive cost reduction initiatives through equipment optimization, spare part management, energy efficiency improvements, and operational excellence programs.
• Lead engineering reviews, failure analysis discussions, and technical presentations for senior management and global engineering organizations.
• Ensure compliance with all safety regulations, company policies, environmental requirements, and industry standards related to equipment operation and engineering activities.
• Promote continuous improvement culture through Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma methodologies, and engineering innovation programs.

BROAD FUNCTIONS :

· To plan, coordinate and follow-up sputter systems start-up / conversion activities and process

documentation.

· To audit sputter parameters and practice periodically, include online SPC and procedure

conformance.

· To lead sputter process related issues trouble shooting (common causes), work closely with shift

process team in sputter process sustaining, trouble shooting & improvement in order to achieve

sputter utilization (down time), yield & quality goal.

· To lead Sputter Process Improvement Projects (SU/STT/Cost/Quality/PPH & others), which

include new products/machines/process qualification.

· To lead, supervise and coach/train process tech, include engineering specialist and characterize

technicians.

· Responsible for sputter process related issues trouble shooting (common causes), work closely

with Shift process team in sputter process sustaining, trouble shooting & improvement in order to

achieve sputter utilization (down time) & quality goal.

· Responsible to lead, supervise and coach/train process tech, include engineering specialist and

characterize technicians. Responsible to train and share PMR/DS sputter process and yield

improvement knowledge with the team.

· Responsible for sputter parameters monitoring, include online SPC monitoring and procedure

conformance.

· Responsible for sputter machine start-up include process characterize (new products & process

changes).

· Responsible for new products/machines/process qualification.

· Responsible for sputter process improvement projects (SU/STT/Cost/Quality/PPH & others).

Others include FMEA.

· Responsible to assist in sputter yield related issues trouble shooting (common causes). Work

closely with Anelva yield team in sputter yield sustaining, trouble shooting & improvement in order

to achieve sputter yield goal. This includes 0725 Operation Yield Improvement.

Improve Media magnetic baseline: ACC% and to enable process stability and repeatability via recipe tuning and optimization. Responsible for new product qualifications.  

PRINCIPAL ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Support manufacturing, qual and engineering improvement including low yield analysis and improvement, failure analysis, test time optimization and other related activities.
• Support the test program conversion from legacy tester transfer to new tester platform.
• Support customer return evaluation (RMA).
• Dispose production low yield lots, verify rejects, and study/fix the root cause.
• Product bench test verification.
• FA support by doing ATE and bench analysis for fault isolation.
• Bench board construction and debugging.
