Project Overview

In biopharmaceutical manufacturing, ensuring equipment is free from microbial contamination after cleaning is critical for product safety. Cleaning validation typically relies on compendial methods such as USP <61>, which assess microbial levels through culture-based techniques. However, these methods require multi-day incubation periods, specialized growth enrichment media, and manual operations, resulting in long turnaround times and increased risk of contamination during handling. The emergence of Rapid Microbial Methods (RMM) as state-of-art technologies seek to address these limitations posed by traditional compendial methods. Despite RMM having a shorter incubation period, the dependency of RMM on cells, high operator complexity and challenges in integrating process analytical technology (PAT) adds cost, time, and introduction of human error. This project aims to develop a novel, label-free microbial detection method, coupled with machine learning tailored for cleaning validation workflows.

This project is hosted within SMART-CAMP (Critical Analytics for Manufacturing Personalized-Medicine), an interdisciplinary research programme in Singapore (CREATE international research campus and innovation hub) and at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). SMART CAMP addresses key technology bottlenecks in cell therapy manufacturing: (i) critical quality attributes of safe, effective cell therapy products; and (ii) integrated process analytics to monitor and modulate those attributes. This high-impact focus includes measurement and feedback control of processing parameters (process analytic technologies, or PAT) that contribute to cell viability and function during cell proliferation, and the measurement at intermediate and final steps of the cell product properties correlated with positive therapeutic outcomes (critical quality attributes, or CQA). This interdisciplinary team comprises engineers, biologists, clinicians, manufacturing, and data analytics experts from multiple MIT academic units, and multiple Singapore-based universities, research centres of excellence, and hospitals who are experienced at translational demonstrations of technologies in safety-regulated industries such as cell therapies.

Responsibilities

SMART-CAMP invites applications for a Postdoctoral Associate position in the area of microbiology and biotechnology, incorporating rapid detection tools and advancing them for testing in biopharmaceutical production. The successful candidate will be expected to work on the identification, verification, and design of ultraviolet spectroscopy and machine learning aided rapid and sensitive detection of micro-organisms, using a combination of microbiology, mass spectrometry and spectroscopic methods. This work will be conducted in close collaboration with a consortium of biopharmaceutical companies.

• This PDA will conduct feasibility studies of detection analytical methods based on metabolite detection of microorganisms to develop a rapid, sensitive diagnostic tool for safety screening.

• The PDA will take responsibility for testing and translating rapid methods for detection, as well as performing comparability/benchmarking experiments with compendial microbiology tests and molecular tests.

• Supervisory experience in junior researchers in all aspects of research.

The PDA will be expected to interface with technical staff from biopharma, as well as a research engineer to achieve the project objectives.

• Tackle system-level issues across hardware and software including intermittent and real-time failures.
• Peer code reviews and support change control and risk management activities in compliance with quality and regulatory standards.

Your Qualifications & Experience

• Minimum Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science / Computer / Electronics Engineering, or related.
• 10+ years of experience in embedded systems or firmware development.
• Strong proficiency in C/C++ for embedded systems with deep understanding of memory management and real-time constraints.
• Extensive experience with embedded platforms (MCUs, SoCs, ARM Cortex…).
• Solid experience with RTOS or embedded Linux systems including task scheduling, synchronization, Inter-Process Communication and performance optimization.
• Experience in the following: Linux kernel, BSP development, secure boot, device tree configuration.
• Proven track record in hardware-software integration (debugging with oscilloscopes, logic analyzers…).
• Familiar with communication protocols (SPI, I2C, UART, CAN, Ethernet…).
• Strong debugging and system-level problem-solving skills.
• Experience with industry-standard coding guidelines including MISRA C, MISRA C++ and software development best practices (version control, code reviews, CI/CD, unit/integration testing).
• Understanding of safety-critical and regulated development environments (IEC 62304, risk management, traceability, cybersecurity guidelines…).
• Strong collaboration and communication skills to work effectively across teams.
• Experience working in fast-paced or startup environments with ability to take ownership and deliver with minimal supervision is an advantage.

2.Equipment and Instrument Maintenance

·      Preventive maintenance for pumps, mixers and othermechanical equipment. (eg. Lubricant replacement, Greasing, Vibration andTemperature Measurement)

·      Sensor cleaning, calibration, and troubleshooting(pH, fluoride, conductivity, TSS sensors) (All tools and soluble provided by client)

·      Replace RO system guard filters as required.

3.Sampling, Compliance, and Waste Management

·      Scheduled sampling for wastewater.

·      Assisting in ad-hoc PUB compliance sampling.

4.Facility Upkeep and Housekeeping

·      Routine descaling, rust prevention, and painting ofmetallic structures.

·      Proper housekeeping practices to maintain safe,clean working conditions.

·      Immediate blockage clearance for Fab and WWTPdrainage systems.

We are looking for a ASSISTANT QUALITY CONTROL to support quality control for hardware devices integrated with our software systems.This role is ideal for someone who is hands-on, detail-oriented, and interestedin testing how hardware and software work together in real-world environments.You will work closely with engineers and senior QA members to ensure reliabledevice performance, system stability, and overall product quality.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform manual testing on hardware devices integrated with software applications
• Verify device functionality, connectivity, and data accuracy across different scenarios
• Test hardware–software interactions, including setup, configuration, and firmware updates
• Execute test cases and test procedures for system, integration, and regression testing
• Identify, document, and track defects related to hardware, firmware, or software behavior
• Re-test issues after fixes to ensure proper resolution
• Assist in preparing and maintaining test cases, test reports, and QA documentation
• Support basic hardware setup, troubleshooting, and test environment preparation
• Participate in sprint reviews and QA discussions with cross-functional teams

Requirements & Qualifications

• Diploma or Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Electronics, Mechatronics, or a related field (or equivalent training)
• Basic understanding of software testing concepts and SDLC
• Interest in hardware, devices, or embedded systems
• Strong attention to detail and ability to follow test procedures accurately
• Willingness to learn hardware testing processes and tools
• Good communication skills to clearly report issues and observations

• Enrolled in a Masters or PhD program in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Robotics or similar technical field of study
• Strong Machine Learning research background with publications in any of the top-tier conferences(RSS, ICRA, CoRL, CVPR, ICRL, ICML, NeurIPS, etc.)
• Proficiency in Python coding and PyTorch or other commonly-used deep learning frameworks
• One-team mindset and effective collaboration with other researchers and engineers
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills
• Previous experience in autonomous driving is preferred
