Job Description

The Centre for International Law (CIL) at the National University of Singapore is a university-level research centre, with the mission of producing cutting edge research on international law. It is also at the forefront of capacity-building initiatives in the Asia-Pacific region through workshops, conferences, training sessions, and academic programmes that engage a diverse audience of government and private sector professionals as well as academics. 

CIL is inviting applications for a Research Fellow position in its ASEAN Law and Policy programme. The Research Fellow will work under the supervision of the Head of the ASEAN Law and Policy Programme, Professor Joseph Weiler. The Research fellow will also work closely with other researchers of the ASEAN Law and Policy Programme.

Applications are open to candidates with and a demonstrable research interest in any aspect of ASEAN Law, and/or the development of ASEAN institutions and the rule-based order. We have a particular interest in candidates with a background in International Economic Law and an interest in the ASEAN Economic Community. Applicants are required to submit a research proposal on a specific area of inquiry related to ASEAN.

The position will commence in November 2026. The initial appointment will be for one year, with the possibility of extension to a second year contingent upon satisfactory progress during the first year.

Responsibilities and Requirements

• To propose and lead a research project on a specific area of ASEAN Cooperation.
• Significant scholarly output (journal articles, book chapters, policy papers and blogs etc).
• To present their research and give papers at academic conferences at NUS and elsewhere.
• To organise capacity building programmes, namely the annual Global Trade Law Academy online and the annual CIL ASEAN Academic Workshop.
• To edit the ASEAN Ideas in Progress Working Paper series.
• To contribute, where appropriate, to CIL’s broader research projects, events and initiatives.
• Subject to the standard NUS terms of annual leave, the Fellow will be expected to be in residence in Singapore throughout the term of their appointment. In addition to annual leave, the Fellow may apply for leave to undertake research and fieldwork overseas, subject to the approval of the CIL Director.

Qualifications

The selection committee will consider the following criteria in making appointments:

1. Applicants must possess a doctoral degree in international law, or a relevant ASEAN-related discipline.
2. Applicants should have a minimum of two-year work experience after receiving their PhD.
3. The primary selection criterion will be the strength of the applicant’s background in ASEAN law and/or integration, and the applicant's potential for excellence in research.

Responsibilities

·       Design and deliver a rigorous, engaging, and future-focused Computer Science curriculum aligned with the Cambridge International Curriculum and the school's educational philosophy.

·       Teach Computer Science across a range of year levels, from Year 6 through to IGCSE and A Level/IB Diploma, fostering computational thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills.

·       Prepare students for IGCSE Computer Science examinations, commencing with the first examination cohort in May/June 2027, through structured and challenging instruction.

·       Work closely with Junior School colleagues to ensure continuity and progression from the Coding and Robotics programme introduced from Year 3 onwards.

• Establish, optimize, and maintain workflows in:

Job Description

    1.       To act as lead engineer in bringing to fruition the project English Philosophy Texts Online (EPTO), a free library of early modern philosophical and theological texts, whose pilot website is at English Philosophical Texts Online.  This builds on the long-term project Hume Texts Online, developed by Professor Millican together with Dr Amyas Merivale (who will continue to act as a consultant).  Hume Texts Online has become the standard resource for Hume scholars worldwide, and the aim of English Philosophical Texts Online is to do the same for a wide range of early modern texts, while extending significantly the analytical tools provided.

   2.        To support the development of technical and organisational software infrastructure for digital humanities within the Centre for Computational Social Science and Humanities, with a view to future grant applications and projects.

   3.        To provide materials, teaching and practical classes to support the application aspects of the course HS1503, Living with AI: Understanding the Technology that’s Changing Everything.  These include AI in humanities research, languages, texts, creative work, and related professional contexts.  Practical work will cover use and critical evaluation of relevant tools, e.g. in textual analysis, translation, research assistance, content generation, and decision support.

Teaching and support for the HS1503 course would be undertaken in close liaison with the course’s principal lecturer (likely to be Assistant Professor Daniel Waxman in Semester 1, and Professor Peter Millican in Semester 2).  It is expected that the appointee will be fully responsible for producing materials and running practical classes and tutorials on the application aspects of the course (but not on the philosophical or historical aspects), and for preparing the corresponding lectures.

Qualifications

This position requires a good first degree and an appropriate Master’s or Doctoral degree, with at least 2 years’ relevant work experience, and good knowledge, technical skills and expertise in the field of digital humanities.

The appointee is expected to have expertise and at least two years’ experience in relevant programming, with a keen interest in software development and exploration of new techniques for digital humanities (including application of machine learning to OCR and textual analysis, and innovative display of analytical results).  In addition, he or she should have some experience in teaching at a university level (or similar), and in producing appropriate educational materials.  Experience in mentoring junior staff, and in providing technical guidance on a variety of projects, would also be desirable.

• Provide strategic guidance to ORS leadership on global research positioning and institutional priorities across foundations, multilateral organisations, and international research programmes.
• Build and maintain institutional intelligence on global funders, agenda-setting international research convenings, major international funding programmes, strategic research priorities, and emerging programme opportunities relevant to SMU's research capabilities
• Exercise institutional judgement in identifying research themes, clusters, and programme opportunities aligned with SMU2030 priorities.
• Lead programme and cluster scoping with Schools, Institutes, and selected local and international partners to identify fundable thematic opportunities.
• Lead senior-level engagement with international research funders, philanthropic foundations, and multilateral organisations to strengthen SMU's positioning within global research ecosystems.
• Identify and cultivate relationships with key international funding organisations and thought leaders to support the development of programme-scale research collaborations.

• Master's degree or equivalent professional experience in public policy, international development, economics, social sciences, business, or related disciplines, with 12 to 15 years of relevant professional experience in research strategy, international programme development, research funding strategy, or global research partnerships.
• Prior experience working within or alongside international funding ecosystems including philanthropic foundations, multilateral development banks, bilateral development agencies, or international research programmes.
• Experience engaging senior stakeholders in international organisations, global foundations, universities, or research institutes will be highly advantageous.
• Deep understanding of global research and development funding ecosystems, including philanthropic foundations, multilateral development institutions, development finance organisations, and bilateral development agencies such as the World Bank, Asian Development Bank, Green Climate Fund, United Nations Development Programme, Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development initiatives, United States Agency for International Development, and the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office.
• Strong familiarity with international research funding mechanisms including Horizon Europe, collaborative research programmes, consortium funding initiatives, foundation-supported research programmes, and multilateral research partnerships.
• Demonstrated experience shaping programme-scale initiatives or research agendas aligned with major international funding opportunities.
• Ability to translate global funding intelligence into institutional research strategies and programme opportunities.
• Experience engaging senior stakeholders across universities, international organisations, government agencies, and philanthropic foundations.
• Strong capability in identifying emerging thematic research areas and aligning institutional research strengths with international funding priorities.
• Experience working on multi-institutional or multi-country research initiatives involving universities, research institutes, and international partners.

The Wildlife Rescue Officer will respond swiftly to distressed wildlife, caring for and relocating wild animals in line with ACRES SOPs. They work diligently, providing vital animal care and supporting rehabilitation efforts at our Wildlife Rescue Centre.

What will you do?

In our recent financial year, ACRES 24-hour wildlife rescue hotline handled over 16,000 calls to help distressed wildlife. The escalating need for assistance and educative rescues on the ground, necessitates a team who is fully equipped and able to deliver as much as possible. As a Wildlife Rescue Officer, your core responsibilities encompass wildlife rescue operations and strategic relocation efforts, meticulously aligned with ACRES's established Standard Operating Procedures (SOP). Concurrently, your role will extend to providing valuable assistance at our Wildlife Rescue Centre.

How will you do it? (Responsibilities and Duties)

· Emergency Response: Promptly respond to wildlife rescue calls through the designated hotline, prioritizing timely and appropriate action.

· Animal Care and Rehabilitation: Perform comprehensive daily care duties for rescued animals, including enclosure maintenance, food preparation, and providing necessary enrichment activities.

· Veterinary Assistance: Assist in the safe handling and treatment procedures for rescued wild animals, adhering to established medical protocols and guidelines.

· Documentation and Record-Keeping: Maintain accurate and detailed records of rescue cases and daily activities, ensuring proper documentation for reference and reporting purposes.

· Coordination and Liaison: Collaborate and liaise with relevant authorities for the safe release and transfer of animals, following established wildlife rehabilitation protocols and guidelines.

· Wildlife Rescue Centre Support: Provide valuable assistance and support at the Wildlife Rescue Centre, contributing to the overall mission of wildlife recovery and rehabilitation.

In addition, we need someone who is:

· Able to communicate clearly in English, and use whatsapp messenger effectively to share updates with the team

· Confident, non-violent assertive approach in clearly communicating the message while advocating for the animals.

· An individual with a strong sense of reliability and a positive demeanor, capable of facilitating, engaging, and fostering connections with volunteers and staff members.

· Flexible in handling unexpected situations and varying needs of various wildlife rescue scenarios.

· Able to efficiently manage and prioritize tasks to ensure delivery of the responsibilities.

· Available to work during weekends, public holidays, and night shifts as required by the roster, showcasing commitment to the role and organizational needs.

· Able to handle wild animals safely, including tortoises, turtles, lizards, snakes, mammals, and birds, while ensuring the well-being and comfort of the animals in care.

· Physically fit to work long hours, up to 30 hours including stand-by at night.

· Initiative to help fellow colleagues and troubleshoot problems.

License/Certification:

• Class 3 Driving License (Preferred).
