Role Focus

• Lead analytical coverage of Northeast Asian gas and LNG markets—China, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan—with a strong emphasis on China. This is a critical role that supports short-term trading, portfolio optimization, and long-term strategic outlook for Shell globally.

What you’ll be doing

Your key responsibilities include:

• Forecast LNG Imports & Supply: Model monthly LNG imports by sector (power, industrial, buildings, transport) and include domestic production and pipeline flows (esp. China).

• Collaborate & Integrate Models: Work with Shell’s Asia Power Analytics team to streamline existing models (e.g., Japan) and develop new power demand models.

• Analyze Market Signals & Contract Terms: Aggregate contractual data for spot/open demand forecasts and continuously monitor news, pricing, shipping flows, and government data for adjustments.

• Build Forecasting Tools & Dashboards: Develop and refine models in Excel and DS/ML platforms (e.g., DataIKU) for short-, mid-, and long-term horizons (0–20 years), with clear visualizations.

• Deliver Insights & Improve Accuracy: Provide country/regional/global forecasts to traders and strategic teams, benchmark against vendors, back-test models, and enhance predictive analytics working with our data science team.

Key Areas of Responsibility

• Ensure that LNG operations fully comply with Shell’s internal standards including compliance and HSSE, paying special attention to HSSE hazards and risks that may have impact on Shell’s license to operate.
• Ensure that all commercial and operational obligations/nominations arising from the contracts are carried out, and that any necessary requirements are complied with.

This role offers an opportunity to develop as a physical LNG trader within an LNG marketing and trading organization, with responsibility for executing trades and optimising positions across Asian LNG markets under the guidance of a team leader. The role requires a strong team player mindset, with active collaboration across the trading desk to deliver collective portfolio outcomes.

The LNG Physical Trader, Asia supports physical LNG trading and portfolio optimisation activities across Asia, with a focus on the Asia Pacific region. A key aspect of the role is the identification, valuation, and management of price optionality embedded in physical LNG contracts, cargo timing, and destination flexibility.

The individual is expected to contribute to value creation through disciplined execution, market analysis, and optimisation of physical LNG positions, while building deeper commercial and market expertise.

Scope of Trading Activities

• Trade spot and strip LNG cargoes in assigned markets for profit, extracting best in class market insights.
• Support price risk and exposure management of JKM, TTF, HH, JCC‑linked pricing, Brent‑linked LNG, and regional gas benchmarks with physical and/or derivatives trades.
• Optimisation of the LNG portfolio in close coordination with optimisation-focused trading colleagues
• Management of seasonal demand exposure and contract optionality within agreed strategies
• Active identification and management of price optionality arising from contract structures, index linkages, cargo timing, and destination flexibility

Skills and Requirements

• Experience in physical LNG, oil, gas, or energy trading, or strong commercial exposure to • Solid knowledge of LNG supply‑demand fundamentals and pricing mechanisms
• Experience or strong interest in physical contracts, logistics, shipping interfaces and physical options management.
• Typically 2–4 years’ experience in LNG, oil, gas, or energy‑related trading or commercial roles is a strong plus

The Senior Origination Manager reporting to Head of Origination East is responsible for a broad range of mid- and long-term commercial activities in Asia Pacific which encompass:

• Building value creating personal and organizational relationships with key counterparties, internal teams, and senior external stakeholders, including officials of businesses and governments in the region to allow or enable the delivery of valuable business opportunities,
• Originating commercial opportunities for LNG purchases and sales, including the opportunity identification, relationship management, structuring, negotiation, agreement closure, and follow through.
• Lead the commercial aspects of market development activities in new and existing markets, including the provision of infrastructure that may require capital deployment, partnering or coordination with other Shell businesses.
• Undertake long term business development, identify new counterparties, and create new opportunities which will result in new market and/or purchase positions while maximizing value for Shell.
• Lead the commercial aspects of LNG purchases within integrated Group LNG equity projects, with an ability to communicate and lead discussions with senior internal and external stakeholders, working closely with other Shell Energy or Integrated Gas teams.
• Holding a lead role as the SLMT relationship holder for existing agreements, protecting the value and creating incremental value, ensuring disputes, price reviews or issues are managed appropriately.
• Engagement with various Shell teams in the region on mid-term and long-term opportunities, collaborating and working closely together with the Portfolio Optimisation team to develop strategy, and deal tactics, and implement innovative deal structures and in a business where every deal could be different and individually structured and negotiated.
• Develop, negotiate, deliver and close Term Sheets, Heads of Agreements and Sale and Purchase Agreements with LNG customers and suppliers in the region, collaborating and working closely together with various functional support teams.
• Hand over deals post close to the Short-Term Trading team, Operations and Book Management functions, while remaining involved in problem resolution if and when the relationship might be affected or if the value at stake become substantial.
• You will also work together with the LNG Decarbonisation Team where appropriate.
• Work with the Head of Origination West and East on building and developing the Origination talent bench to enable SLMT to be the best in-class LNG Origination team in the business.
  

'A Senior Origination Manager must have:

• Relentless focus and drive on prioritizing and delivering max value for Shell.
• A detailed understanding of the LNG Market, trends, national and customer plans within the region, a knowledge of regulatory structures, and a sound understanding of the LNG value chain from gas production to treatment to liquefaction to shipping to regasification and marketing.
