Role purpose

Our South-east Asia Intelligence & Investigations team works closely with leading multinational corporations, financial institutions, private market investors and law firms to help them understand and manage complex business risks across the region.

We support clients on a wide range of matters, including integrity due diligence, reputational risk assessments, investigations, political and regulatory risk analysis, and strategic market-entry decisions. Our work helps clients make informed decisions, protect their operations and navigate challenging operating environments.

Researchers play a key role in supporting the delivery of high-quality, client-ready intelligence and analytical reports. They contribute to research, analysis and report drafting across a variety of assignments, while also supporting the practice’s business development and thought leadership activities through the preparation of client briefings, sector updates and other research materials.

This role offers an excellent opportunity for candidates with a strong academic and/or professional interest in Vietnam and Southeast Asia to develop a career in business intelligence, strategic advisory and risk consulting. While this is an early-career role, candidates with relevant professional experience will be viewed favourably.

Role tasks and responsibilities

Research, analysis and report writing

• Conduct in-depth research and analysis using public records, media reporting, corporate disclosures, databases and other open-source materials
• Support the production of high-quality, client-ready reports within agreed timelines and budgets
• Analyse complex information and identify key reputational, political, commercial and integrity risks relevant to client objectives
• Contribute to integrity due diligence, business intelligence and investigative assignments across Southeast Asia, with a primary focus on Vietnam
• Work closely with project managers, editors and regional colleagues to ensure analytical consistency and high-quality deliverables
• Support the identification of emerging political, regulatory and business trends relevant to clients operating in the region

Business development and knowledge management

• Conduct research and prepare materials to support client engagements, proposals, briefings and marketing activities
• Contribute to internal knowledge management by maintaining and expanding the practice’s databases and research resources
• Support the preparation of sector briefings, thematic research and thought leadership content
• Attend client meetings, calls and research trips where appropriate

Requirements

Knowledge and experience

•  Excellent command of written and spoken English and Vietnamese
•  Strong research, analytical and report-writing skills
•  Ability to synthesise and communicate complex information clearly and concisely
•  Strong critical thinking and problem-solving capabilities
•  Demonstrated interest in political, economic and business developments in Vietnam and Southeast Asia
•  Good understanding of commercial transactions and corporate structures
•  Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities under tight deadlines
•  Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a regional team environment
•  Strong professional ethic, intellectual curiosity and willingness to learn

Qualifications and specialist skills

•  At least a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline, such as international relations, political science, economics, business, finance, journalism, communications or other social sciences
•  Relevant internship or professional experience in research, consulting, journalism, risk advisory, investigations or related fields would be advantageous

Our third-party due diligence (VANTAGE) team assess our clients’ current, former or potential counterparties, looking for any issues that might pose a reputational or business risk to them, wherever they may be in the world. The work is compliance-focused and volume-driven.

The Associate Research Manager is responsible for the quality of VANTAGE work. S/he will oversee and guide Researchers to ensure they produce clear, analytical and exceptionally well-written reports which help our clients protect their integrity and reputation.

S/he will also support the Research Manager in training researchers and managing projects, leveraging internal and external resources in order to complete VANTAGE projects in a timely and effective manner. 

The successful candidate will have a strong knowledge of open-source intelligence and public record research, experience in writing and reviewing due diligence reports, people management skills and has excellent communication, writing and interpersonal skills.

People Management

• Manage a team of researchers and senior researchers
• Define, for each team member, objectives and responsibilities in line with the practice goals
• Conduct performance reviews
• Ensure well-being and professional development of staff
• Support the Research Manager in recruiting new researchers

Project management of third-party due diligence

• Ensure VANTAGE work is properly scoped, allocated to researchers, tracked and ultimately delivered on time and within budget
• Communicate directly with clients in order to clarify the scope of projects, address questions, and suggest potential additional avenues of research
• Review and approve (content and editorial) VANTAGE work, ensuring projects are of high quality and meet Clients’ specifications
• Liaise with and provide feedback to vendors and subcontractors, ensuring the quality of work they provide is high and adheres to our global delivery standards
• Engage with colleagues in the Business Intelligence team whenever VANTAGE work requires their input and collaboration

Regional research initiatives

• Assist Research Manager in training new researchers in the VANTAGE methodology and approach, ensuring new team members successfully complete the onboarding process
• Provide continual training and cascade updates to the VANTAGE methodology and approach
• Monitor quality of work and give feedback to researchers; motivate and guide researchers to ensure they are focused and directed effectively on operational and other aspects of the work
• Interact regularly with other Team Leads and Associate Research Managers to provide support and feedback on VANTAGE work
• Participate in discussions with other Team Leads and Associate Research Managers to provide insight on potential service/product improvement

• Education to degree level (minimum of a bachelor’s or equivalent experience)
• Full fluency in English written and spoken is essential

• Experience in writing, researching and reviewing/editing due diligence reports; demonstrated excellence in research, writing and editing in English
• Experience in managing projects, especially where the project team is spread across several locations
• At least 1-2 years’ experience in line management
• Strong knowledge of research techniques, databases, networks, online registers and archives and other OSINT research tools
• Experience influencing people across an organization, especially without direct reporting lines
• Proven ability to meet project deadlines

Preferred

• Knowledge of software-based case management solutions
• Experience in a compliance team in a financial institution or a corporate setting
• Knowledge of other languages and the socio-political environment in the region is an advantage
• Qualifications specific to financial crime or compliance would be an advantage

Control Risks is looking to bring on a consultant as a part of an embedded project with a top tier client in the technology industry. Based in Singapore, this role will conduct onsite operational security assessments and red teaming operations of the client’s data center facilities throughout the Asia Pacific region. The Consultant will travel to the client’s facilities to conduct detailed interviews with facility stakeholders and perform a physical site assessment to ensure compliance with existing security standards and requirements.

Role tasks and responsibilities:

• Conduct on site physical intrusion Red Team assessments to understand and test the client’s physical security response plans.
• Conduct interviews with a wide array of security stakeholders to determine the operational security practices in place at each facility.
• Conduct covert assessments of the client’s technical security infrastructure, including electronic access control systems, video surveillance systems, and communications networks.
• Ensure findings are collected and presented in a clear and consistent manner to facilitate reliable analysis across a high volume of sites.
• Provide clear and consistent recommendations regarding security policies and practices.
• Maintain technical proficiency in the security industry, sharing knowledge throughout the firm and enhancing the department's current document templates and methodology.
• Continuously enhance client relationships through consistent delivery of high-quality reports and professional presentation.

• 5+ years of work experience in physical security assessments for a global security organization, consulting firm, or major corporation.
• 1+ years of experience planning and conducting Red Team exercises, ability to learn and grow in Red Team Assessments.
• Familiarity with physical security technologies including access control measures, video surveillance systems, and intrusion detection systems.
• Understanding of physical and operational security principals including defense-in-depth design, standard operating procedures, and incident management practices.
• Ability to successfully produce quality deliverables including well written reports and professional oral delivery of assessment findings and recommendations.
• Ability to travel internationally 30%+ of the time and on short notice.
• Exceptional written and interpersonal communications skills.
