Role purpose

Our South-east Asia Intelligence & Investigations team works closely with leading multinational corporations, financial institutions, private market investors and law firms to help them understand and manage complex business risks across the region.

We support clients on a wide range of matters, including integrity due diligence, reputational risk assessments, investigations, political and regulatory risk analysis, and strategic market-entry decisions. Our work helps clients make informed decisions, protect their operations and navigate challenging operating environments.

Researchers play a key role in supporting the delivery of high-quality, client-ready intelligence and analytical reports. They contribute to research, analysis and report drafting across a variety of assignments, while also supporting the practice’s business development and thought leadership activities through the preparation of client briefings, sector updates and other research materials.

This role offers an excellent opportunity for candidates with a strong academic and/or professional interest in Vietnam and Southeast Asia to develop a career in business intelligence, strategic advisory and risk consulting. While this is an early-career role, candidates with relevant professional experience will be viewed favourably.

Role tasks and responsibilities

Research, analysis and report writing

• Conduct in-depth research and analysis using public records, media reporting, corporate disclosures, databases and other open-source materials
• Support the production of high-quality, client-ready reports within agreed timelines and budgets
• Analyse complex information and identify key reputational, political, commercial and integrity risks relevant to client objectives
• Contribute to integrity due diligence, business intelligence and investigative assignments across Southeast Asia, with a primary focus on Vietnam
• Work closely with project managers, editors and regional colleagues to ensure analytical consistency and high-quality deliverables
• Support the identification of emerging political, regulatory and business trends relevant to clients operating in the region

Business development and knowledge management

• Conduct research and prepare materials to support client engagements, proposals, briefings and marketing activities
• Contribute to internal knowledge management by maintaining and expanding the practice’s databases and research resources
• Support the preparation of sector briefings, thematic research and thought leadership content
• Attend client meetings, calls and research trips where appropriate

Requirements

Knowledge and experience

•  Excellent command of written and spoken English and Vietnamese

Qualifications and specialist skills

Role purpose

The Financial Services Researcher is responsible for producing high quality enhanced due diligence reports for financial services clients. He/she will be responsible for producing clear, analytical and exceptionally well-written reports which help financial services Clients in the Asia Pacific region meet compliance and regulatory requirement.
He/she will be responsible for a range of tasks, including conducting in-depth research of public records such as media articles, corporate records, litigation and regulatory filings, social media sites, and compliance databases; engaging in discreet interviews to gather information around companies’ and individuals’ reputation and develop intelligence on specific topics and industries; producing enhanced due diligence and research reports to support major banking transactions such as IPOs and debt issuance. He/she will support the work of his/her line manager in training, managing internal and external resources in order to complete enhanced due diligence projects for financial institutions in a timely and effective manner.

Role tasks and responsibilities

• Project management of enhanced due diligence assignments for financial services clients
• Conduct public records research and discreet interviews to gather intelligence surrounding companies and individuals
• Conduct research into specific topics and issues and draft summaries and findings in situations where contentious issues arise, either as part of a team or independently, depending on the requirement of the situation
• Produce high-quality research reports for financial institution clients  
• Assist in the proposal process, conduct scoping research, and communicate with clients to understand their requirements
• From time to time, communicate directly with the clients, which primarily include members of the compliance or internal control departments of financial institutions, in order to clarify the scope of projects, address questions, and suggest potential additional avenues of research
• Assist his or her managers in developing and expanding the pool of research resources and subcontractors of Control Risks in the region
• Liaise with and provide feedback to vendors and subcontractors, ensuring the quality of work they provide is high and adheres to our global delivery standards

• Engage with colleagues across Control Risks to address client queries
• Regional research initiatives
  Interact regularly with researchers, supervisors, managers, and the Quality Assurance team to provide support and feedback on VANTAGE work
  Participate in discussions with other members of the VANTAGE team and Control Risks Group on potential service/product improvement

Essential

• Education to degree level (minimum of a bachelor’s or equivalent experience)
• Full fluency in written and spoken Mandarin and English is essential
• Experience in writing, researching and reviewing/editing research reports; demonstrated excellence in research, writing and editing in Mandarin and English
• Strong knowledge of open source research techniques
• Good communication skills; ability to think on one’s feet and engage with individuals of different levels of seniority and from different backgrounds, to obtain information
• Ability to think critically and solve problems
• Strong knowledge of the socio-political environment in APAC
• Proven ability to meet project deadlines and perform well under pressure

Preferred

• Experience executing and managing enhanced due diligence projects for financial institution clients
• Experience engaging with international clients, preparing written proposals, providing verbal updates, and answering follow up questions and queries
• Fluency in Bahasa as an additional language

About the Job

We are looking for an independent, strategic, and flexible mid-level Legal Counsel who will thrive in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.

This position reports into and will work closely with senior counsel supporting the company’s professional services offerings, assisting with client deal negotiations and agreements across APAC. This role is ideal for a commercial lawyer with strong drafting capabilities who enjoys hands-on contract negotiation and drafting work in a collaborative in-house setting, providing practical and business-focused guidance and support to internal business stakeholders as well as working alongside other regional legal teams.

The role requires a balance of legal expertise, commercial acumen, and strong stakeholder engagement, and the ability to apply the law to novel situations and to find pragmatic and creative solutions to business issues where appropriate.

Role tasks and responsibilities

• Draft, review, and negotiate commercial contracts, including client service agreements and vendor contracts. You will be expected to join negotiations with internal teams and clients on commercial contracts and other legal agreements, concluding commercial terms to align with company policies and objectives as well as mitigate potential risks involved with specific contract terms.
• Liaise with account managers and regional business line leads, amongst others throughout the company, to ensure correct implementation of all legal guidelines and other policies. You will act as a trusted advisor to the internal stakeholders and make sure that compliance can be ensured.
• Advise on regulatory obligations affecting business across APAC. Ensure compliance with local requirements relating but not limited to data privacy (e.g., PDPA), anti bribery, competition laws. Implement global legal/compliance policies at the regional level and ensure local adaptations where necessary.
• Stay current on relevant industry, commercial, IP, privacy, data, employment, and other laws, regulations, and developments to adapt our commercial processes accordingly.

Role requirements

• 6-10 PQE lawyer, ideally with some in-house counsel experience.
• Qualified lawyer in good standing admitted to practice in Malaysia or any other Commonwealth jurisdiction.
• Experience reviewing, drafting, and negotiating commercial contracts, particularly service agreements. Good familiarity with data protection, intellectual property, HR and general corporate law is a huge plus.
• Have a good eye for detail, as well as an ability to understand the bigger picture.
• Proactive, strategic, and results-oriented; able to work on tight deadlines without sacrificing accuracy.
• Comfortable working closely with senior counsel while managing day-to-day contracting tasks independently.
• Ability to work in English at a high professional level (both written and verbal). Other language skills (Mandarin, Bahasa, Vietnamese, Japanese) are desirable but not essential.
