What you’ll do

As a Staff Engineer on the Risk Platform, you will be a senior technical leader and hands-on builder. You’ll own critical parts of our real-time detection platform and client-facing risk and fraud management products, setting the technical direction and raising the engineering bar while working closely with your manager and cross-functional partners.

• Mentor and uplevel other engineers, including senior ICs: provide technical coaching, pair programming, design guidance, and feedback that helps them do the best work of their careers.

• Collaborate across teams (platform, data, SRE, security, and other product engineering teams) to define clear interfaces, SLAs, and ownership boundaries for shared services and infrastructure.

• Identify and pay down technical debt deliberately, balancing short-term impact with long-term platform health and enabling faster, safer delivery over time.

Who you are

We’re looking for people who meet the minimum qualifications below. The preferred qualifications are great to have, but not strictly required.

Minimum qualifications

• 7+ years of back-end engineering experience, including substantial time owning and operating complex, distributed systems in production.

• Deep experience in risk, fraud, or fintech systems (e.g., payments, banking, trading, or similar high-stakes domains where correctness and reliability are critical).

• Strong proficiency in Java, including multi-threading, high-concurrency patterns, performance tuning, and networked service design (I/O/NIO, HTTP/TCP, REST).

• Hands-on experience with distributed system design, including event-driven architectures, partitioning/sharding, consistency models, caching strategies, and resiliency patterns.

• Proficiency with Spring / Spring Boot and build tools such as Gradle or Maven.

• Practical experience with containerization and orchestration, particularly Docker and Kubernetes, in production environments.

• Solid understanding of observability and operations: logging, metrics, tracing, dashboards, and incident management for large-scale systems.

• Ability to lead complex technical initiatives end-to-end, influencing engineers and stakeholders without relying on formal management authority.

• Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical topics clearly to engineers, product managers, and non-technical stakeholders.

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience with risk-specific components, such as rule engines, feature stores, model serving frameworks, real-time stream processing, and A/B testing / experimentation platforms.

• Working knowledge of machine learning in production, including model lifecycle, feature engineering, evaluation metrics, and online/offline consistency.

• Experience with modern data and storage technologies, such as Cassandra, Redis, NoSQL databases, Hadoop, and streaming systems like Kafka, Flink, or Spark.

• Polyglot engineering experience with one or more of Kotlin, Scala, Python, or Golang.

• Cloud experience with Alibaba Cloud, AWS, or GCP, including cloud networking, security best practices, and cost awareness.

• Familiarity with regulatory and security standards relevant to payments and financial services (e.g., PCI DSS, SOC 2, data privacy and protection best practices).

• Demonstrated impact as a Staff or Principal Engineer (or equivalent) in high-growth, high-scale environments.

Key Responsibilities:

Domain &Functional SME

• Subject Matter Expert (SME) for Collections processes, including delinquency and workflow management, recoveries, write-offs, legal collections, and customer communications.
• Translate business requirements into functional and technical specifications aligned with the target collections platform.
• Validate functional designs, configurations, and solution approaches to ensure they meet business intent and regulatory requirements.

Conversion &Data Migration Delivery

• Lead conversion and data migration strategy, including scope definition, data mapping, reconciliation, and validation.
• Oversee end-to-end legacy-to-target data conversion, ensuring data quality, completeness, and accuracy.
• Define and manage mock conversions, dress rehearsals, and cutover planning.
• Drive resolution of data issues, gaps, and defects in collaboration with technical teams.
• Coordinate with architecture, development, testing, and infrastructure teams to ensure aligned delivery.
• Manage dependencies across workstreams, vendors, and system integrators.
• Ensure adherence to the bank’s delivery standards, SDLC, and governance frameworks.

Testing &Readiness

• Oversee functional, system, integration, and testing from a business and SME perspective.
• Ensure test scenarios fully cover collections processes, conversion outcomes, and edge cases.
• Support business readiness activities including operational handover, and hypercare.

Stakeholder& Vendor Management

• Serve as a primary liaison between business, IT, vendors, and system integrators.
• Provide clear status reporting, risk management, and issue escalation to senior stakeholders.
• Guide vendors on functional expectations and validate delivered outcomes.

Responsibilities:

• The design, development and implementation of applications related changes to agreed timeframes and standards.
• Responsible for peer code reviews to ensure the quality of the code deployed in the NEMS systems.
• Working closely with the Applications team and internal business users to ensure changes are developed in a way that that provides maximum benefit to the company, in a cost-effective, secured and operationally “risk-free” manner.
• Providing assessments on the impact and risk of potential changes to the systems and the business as a whole.
• Creation of concise detailed system specifications for changes that solve business needs and implementing changes to these agreed specifications.
• Following strict change control and version control processes to ensure quality changes are implemented in an auditable manner.
• Be outspoken in providing “best practise” recommendations.
• Proactively suggest ways to reduce operational overhead by “streamlining” manual tasks into automated procedures.
• Providing application support to the Operations team whenever necessary.

Requirements:

• Degree (IT) or Equivalent Formal Training.
• Strong applications development experience with at least 8 years of development work experience with the following tools and technologies:
• J2EE, Java, PrimeFaces, JSP, Servlets, JMS, Angular, SpringBoot, PL/SQL, java Microservice, REST API, XML, XSL, EJB, Struts, Hibernate, J2EE Design Patterns, Java Security, Oracle DB19C, Oracle Weblogic / DB11g and 12C, JBoss EAP 7.0 Eclipse, Container based architecture
• Experience on Applications security throughout the development lifecycle and ability to enhance applications to meet the security best practices.
• Highly motivated to provide complete solutions to customers. Being able to talk to users and understand their requirements is essential.
• The ability to manage oneself during projects from start to finish, throughout the whole development lifecycle.
• Experience with software configuration management principles and systems.
