Job Summary
The Wintel Engineer works within a team to ensure daily availability and optimal performance of Wintel Servers, managing Windows Server OS installations, administration, incident resolution, and Root Cause Analysis to support critical business functions.
Responsibilities
- Implement ongoing maintenance, security, and availability of Windows-based infrastructure aligned with business needs
- Troubleshoot and resolve Windows OS incidents and problems following customer processes
- Perform Root Cause Analysis (RCA) for OS-related service problems to support problem management
- Coordinate with support vendors for maintenance, support, and issue resolution
- Support Windows Server systems, system software, clustering software, and management agents
- Analyze historical usage data for CPU, memory, I/O, and storage to identify trends and inform capacity planning
- Develop and implement capacity improvement plans based on analysis
- Assist in developing and maintaining the Technical Disaster Recovery Plan
- Provide technical support and execute the Disaster Recovery plan during incidents and drills
- Set up and manage Windows Active Directory, including Group Policy Objects (GPOs) and user profiles
- Configure and manage Windows Clustering environments
- Set up and manage VMware hosts (including vCenters) and virtual machines across OS platforms (Linux and Windows)
- Set up and manage Hyper-V hosts and virtual machines
- Configure and manage NetBackup and/or BackupExec backup solutions, defining backup policies based on industry standards
- Manage enterprise-wide Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager, including policy definition per industry standards
- Manage server OS patching procedures and implement security hardening measures
- Perform system backups and restores according to business requirements
- Regularly review event logs to monitor system health and security
- Evaluate and review software patches before and after installation to ensure stability
- Manage and monitor systems using monitoring software to maintain performance and availability
- Conduct operational meetings with customers to review system status and improvements
- Write and update technical design, build, and process documentation to maintain accurate records
Required competencies and certifications
- Knowledge in Microsoft Cluster is a must
- Documented knowledge or certification for Windows Server 2003/2008 is a must; Windows Server 2012 knowledge is advantageous
- Working knowledge of VMware vSphere 4.x and above
- Working knowledge of SAN Storage management
- ITIL Foundation certification or equivalent work experience
Preferred competencies and qualifications
- Experience working in a government agency
- Experience with installation and operation of Windows Servers (2003/2008/2012), software, and backup solutions in large enterprise environments
- Knowledge of server hardware and equipment such as HP, IBM, Dell servers, and HP/IBM SAN
- Familiarity with deep-level Windows Server OS troubleshooting and problem resolution
- Familiarity with enterprise virus protection software
- Familiarity with major systems monitoring software and its functionality
- Some automation and scripting experience
- SAN storage knowledge
- Reasonable leadership and interpersonal skills
- Good oral and written communication skills
- Ability to independently solve and troubleshoot problems
- Self-motivated, customer-oriented, and a team player in project settings
