Job Description
The Senior Engineer, Process Development & Sustaining will lead the development, optimization, and sustaining of manufacturing processes for WD's HDD storage products. This is a technically deep, cross-functional role requiring strong foundation in chemistry, materials science, or chemical engineering.

You will drive process characterization, chemical/material qualification, and yield improvement initiatives while ensuring manufacturing processes remain stable, compliant, and cost-competitive. You are expected to operate with high technical autonomy, interface with global R&D and process teams, and mentor junior engineers on the Penang floor.

This role is ideal for a Master's, or Bachelor's graduate in Chemical Engineering or Materials Science who is passionate about translating lab-scale science into high-volume manufacturing solutions.

Key Responsibilities

Process Development

• Design and develop new manufacturing processes or significantly improve existing ones for HDD production
• Conduct Design of Experiments (DOE) to characterize process windows, identify critical process parameters (CPPs), and optimize process outputs
• Evaluate and qualify new chemicals, materials, and process consumables for manufacturing use
• Develop process recipes, control plans, and standard operating procedures (SOPs)
• Translate R&D/lab-scale processes into robust, scalable, high-volume manufacturing processes

Process Sustaining

• Own sustaining engineering for assigned process modules — ensure processes remain stable, in control, and within specification
• Monitor Statistical Process Control (SPC) charts; respond to out-of-control signals with structured problem-solving
• Lead Engineering Change Orders (ECOs) for process changes, chemical substitutions, and material updates
• Manage process deviation requests and ensure timely resolution
• Maintain process documentation, control plans, and work instructions per WD QMS

Chemical & Material Engineering

• Lead chemical/material qualification activities including incoming material testing, process compatibility studies, and shelf-life evaluations
• Evaluate alternative chemistries and materials for cost reduction, sustainability, or supply chain risk mitigation
• Work with EHS team to ensure safe handling, storage, and disposal of process chemicals per regulatory requirements
• Support RoHS, REACH, and PFAS compliance reviews for process chemicals and materials

Yield & Quality Improvement

• Lead yield loss analysis and drive structured RCCA (Root Cause and Corrective Action) for process-related defects
• Apply Six Sigma / SPC / Lean methodologies to reduce process variation and improve Cpk
• Partner with Quality Engineering to resolve customer escapes and field returns linked to process issues
• Drive continuous improvement projects with measurable cost and quality impact

NPI & Technology Transfer

• Support New Product Introduction (NPI) process readiness — from process concept to mass production release
• Lead or support technology transfer of new processes from R&D/HQ to Penang manufacturing
• Develop process qualification protocols (PQ), installation qualification (IQ), and operational qualification (OQ) plans

Cross-Functional Collaboration

• Interface with R&D, Product Engineering, Quality, EHS, Supply Chain, and Equipment Engineering teams globally
• Present process data, findings, and recommendations to senior management and global stakeholders
• Collaborate with equipment engineers on process-equipment interactions and optimization

People & Mentorship

• Mentor and coach junior and mid-level process engineers
• Lead technical reviews, knowledge-sharing sessions, and engineering forums
• Support capability building within the Penang process engineering team

• Collaborate as project team member on Software design matters.
• Capture and evaluate customer, internal requirements and vehicle specific interface requirements. Identify suitable concept in terms of functional, technological and effort.
• Adhere to Bosch Software Engineering Process as e.g.:-
  • Perform requirement reviews, design reviews and code reviews.
  • Perform unit testing and release of the software according to SW release process.
• Develop the SW design taking into consideration the dependencies to other module and integration into the overall system.
• SW programming using both standard and proprietary software tools and libraries.
• Create SW test specifications and protocols, if necessary develop test SW. Executes test plans to ensure new software meets specifications, functionalities and performance requirements.
• Analyze failure log, clarify system problems and resolve design issues.
• Develop and produce technical reports, design analysis and documentation in support of designs.
• Assist Manufacturing in troubleshooting manufacturing related problems.
• Provide post-production support.

As a Senior Equipment Engineer specializing in sputter media, you will be responsible for leading equipment sustaining, reliability, and continuous improvement activities to support high-volume hard disk media manufacturing. You will play a key role in driving equipment performance, improving operational efficiency, and supporting new technology implementation. This role requires strong technical leadership to guide technicians in maintaining stable manufacturing operations, reducing equipment downtime, and enabling next-generation product and process requirements.
 
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Lead day-to-day equipment sustaining activities, including troubleshooting, failure analysis, and resolution of equipment-related production issues.
• Drive equipment reliability improvement initiatives to enhance equipment uptime, reduce chronic failures, and improve overall operational stability.
• Develop, implement, and optimize preventive and predictive maintenance strategies to improve long-term equipment performance.
• Lead root cause analysis (RCA) for major equipment failures and implement effective corrective and preventive actions.
• Support equipment upgrades, hardware modifications, and machine conversion activities to meet product and technology roadmap requirements.
• Coordinate new equipment installation, commissioning, qualification, and acceptance to ensure systems meet operational and safety standards.
• Monitor and analyze equipment performance indicators such as OEE, MTBF, MTTR, and downtime trends to identify improvement opportunities.
• Collaborate closely with Process Engineering, Yield Engineering, Production, and Quality teams to improve process capability and manufacturing performance.
• Drive engineering projects related to equipment improvements, automation enhancement, and productivity optimization.

• Work closely with OEM vendors and suppliers to resolve technical issues, implement upgrades, and support equipment technology development.

1. Responsible for the procurement activities of the assigned materials which include:

• Responsible as main interface with customer order planning team & project stakeholder with effective coordination.
• Support material simulation activities to meet customer order fluctuation & fulfillment.
• Study and take appropriate actions on the MRP reports after MRP run.
• Provide daily input/updates on material delivery related issues in critical material list.
• Attend regular task force calls on critical supply materials status. Activate escalation to next level according to escalation RASIC.
• Attend DLR (Daily Leadership Routine), a platform for information exchange with customer order planning.
• Ensure material arrival with right qty and timing to avoid production disruption.
• Coordinate activities with relevant parties to avoid line stoppage if material cannot arrive on time
• Track and monitor supplier delivery performance.
• Required to manage suppliers with higher levels of complexity & supplier development.
• Support the preparation of reports and presentation slides when necessary.
• Support continuous process improvement and lean initiatives

2. Constantly review the planning parameters according to business trend.

3. Responsible to support the activities on inventory management to achieve monthly coverage and inventory turns including quick disposition on rejected and obsolete materials, minimize overhanging materials, work on
overhanging materials claims, disposition on transportation damage material etc.

4. Strategic planning to minimize special premium cost (e.g. change of ship mode) to support situation requirement.

5. Work on special freight claims and line-down claims due to delinquent supply from suppliers.

6. Involve in engineering changes request. Determine implementation dates of ECN (Engineering Change Notice) for raw material. Assist the project team in ECN effective date setting for software related topic.

7. Support the analysis of raw material ABC classification, inventory report etc. as and when needed.

8. Support activities related to Bosch Production System (BPS), e.g. kanban/consi implementation, continuous
improvement project etc.

9. Work together and support each other within LOG as well as with another department.

10. Support and work towards achieving the departmental goal & central deployment KPIs.

11. Perform any other duties assigned by the immediate superior from time to time.

12. Escalate procurement issues that affect a single Value Stream (Level 1).

• Planner in SMT line scheduling by customers and products
• Monthly SMT Capacity Planning simulation and execution
• Monthly discussion with LOG and MOE5&MOE2 for Capacity discussion and loading

• Main driver for SMT leveling projects

1. Monitor and manage inbound logistics operations including resource planning for priority tasks.
2. Ensure smooth material/operations flow from inbound until production based on established processes.

5. Monitor KPIs and report deviations with proposed actions.
6. Act as first-level escalation point for operational, MHE and system issues.
7. Person in charge for all custom related topics and improvement activities in custom declaration, clearance, AEO, hand carry shipments, bonded warehouse, FIZ and other custom related topics.
8. Key contact person to liaise with Government agencies such as MITI, MBPP, SIRIM, MOF, Custom and so on for certification/license/permit application and other related topics involve Government agencies.
9. Support review and update of operational procedures and workflows.
10. Support SAP-related topics and ensure correct system usage.
11. Conduct on-the-job training and knowledge sharing to team members.
12. Ensure compliance with ISO procedures and company directives.
13. Support superior in reporting, analysis, and operational planning.
14. Support superior in both internal and external audits by preparing documentation, providing necessary information, and ensuring processes are audit-ready.

• Develop and maintain test programs for characterization, wafer sort, and production using the Advantest V93000 (93K) platform.
• Design and validate test hardware solutions for high-speed I/O (HSIO) applications.
• Lead projects across all development phases, from bring-up to production ramp.
• Collaborate with DFT and DFM teams to improve testability, optimize yield, and enhance overall test methodologies.
• Establish and implement robust test practices, including GR&R, HTOL, and characterization procedures.
• Drive continuous improvement of test coverage, efficiency, and quality.
• Provide technical leadership and mentorship as needed across cross-functional teams.
